British mathematician who developed the theory of iterated function systems (IFS) and, with Stephen Demko, proved the 1985 Collage Theorem that made fractal image compression a practical engineering technique rather than just a curiosity of self-similar geometry. Co-founded Iterated Systems Inc. with Alan Sloan in 1987 to commercialize the approach, which reached products such as Microsoft Encarta before the fractal-video successor was abandoned around 2016.

Matters to this vault as the founding figure of the fractal/IFS compression tradition that a 2022 NeurIPS paper (Poli et al.) explicitly reframed as a differentiable, learnable operator — the one document found that draws a direct citation line from fractal compression to implicit neural representations, the younger field's "encode a signal as a compact function" idea.
