Michael Dertouzos

Director of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, and — per Roland & Shiman's institutional history — one of the researchers whose alarm at Japan's Fifth Generation announcement was genuine rather than instrumental, in direct contrast to DARPA director Robert Cooper's private skepticism about the same threat. On learning of the Fifth Generation plan: "I got on the horn and started screaming. I wrote to our computer corporation presidents. I went to visit the Defense Science Board. I started working with Cooper and Kahn." His alarm is the community-side half of the "one inspiration, two motives" finding that grounds claim-fifth-generation-project-inspired-darpa-strategic-computing-initiative at Tier 1-2.
