Oxford philosopher and logician (1925–2011), known within philosophy for his work on the
philosophy of language and intuitionism, and separately the foremost modern historian of
playing cards and tarot — author of *The Game of Tarot* (1980) and *A Wicked Pack of Cards*
(1996, with Ronald Decker and Thierry Depaulis), and co-author with Kamal Abu-Deeb of "Some
Remarks on Mamluk Playing Cards" (*Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes* 36,
1973), the standing academic study of the Topkapi Mamluk deck's structure. Matters to this
vault as the named authority behind the vault's Mamluk card-suit transmission claim: his own
1973 and 1996 texts remain unread this session, but his primary 1999 "Unsolved Problems"
submission was read directly and is the strongest-tier source reached so far in the vault's
attempt to verify the claim against his actual scholarship.
