Hungarian-British polymath (1891-1976) — physical chemist, economist, and
philosopher of science — best known for the concept of tacit knowledge
("we know more than we can tell") developed in *The Tacit Dimension* (1966),
and for a 1914-16 gas-adsorption theory dismissed as implausible in his own
time and vindicated decades later by quantum-mechanical resonance theory.

Matters to this vault as a person-bridge across three otherwise-unconnected
clusters: David Autor's "Polanyi's paradox" names his tacit-knowledge concept
as the reason certain tasks resist automation

- 2026-09-10: A direct read of Dreyfus's 1972 *What Computers Can't Do*
  confirms Polanyi is named and quoted twice by name in Chapter 7, cited
  from two separate works (*Personal Knowledge*, *Knowing and Being*) as
  part of Dreyfus's positive case for embodied skill against symbolic
  AI — not just a Wikipedia paraphrase. Dreyfus's engagement is critical
  as well as appreciative: he argues Polanyi's own later account of rule
  learning undermines Polanyi's point. Separately, Polanyi Society
  scholars reviewing Dreyfus's 2015 *Retrieving Realism* (with Charles
  Taylor) find Polanyi almost entirely uncredited there, complicating any
  reading of the influence as a durable, career-long touchstone.

- 2026-09-12: A direct read of Polanyi's own 1951 *The Logic of Liberty*
  resolves the Mont Pelerin thread's open hook. His political-economy work is
  not a separate chapter: the book's preface grounds liberty in the same
  "fiduciary" commitment-structure that became his tacit-knowledge epistemology

  He also put the term "spontaneous order" in print in 1948, over a decade
  before it appears in [[entity-friedrich-hayek|Hayek]]'s own work
  ([[claim-polanyi-published-spontaneous-order-1948-predating-hayeks-own-use]]),
  never staged the Polanyi–Hayek "break" in his own text (Hayek is named only
  three times, all on the economic-calculation debate)
