Philosopher of science at New York University, known for work on explanation,
probability, and the social structure of scientific inquiry, including *The
Knowledge Machine* (2020). His 2003 paper "The Role of the Priority Rule in
Science" gives an economic, mechanism-design account of why science awards all
credit to the first discoverer.
