Computer music researcher and software designer who, beginning in 1985 at
IRCAM in Paris, created "The Patcher" — later **Max**, then Max/MSP — a
real-time graphical "patching" environment for interactive computer music,
and who later created its open-source successor Pure Data. Matters to this
vault as one half of the LabVIEW/Max "independent convergence" question
thread ([[question-verify-labview-max-dataflow-convergence-independence]]):
his own 2002 retrospective essay, "Max at Seventeen," is the vault's first
Tier 1 primary on Max's origins, grounding

- 2026-08-14: A direct re-read of the full essay text shows the two dataflow
  claims already in the vault aren't independent findings but premise and
  conclusion of one continuous argument, restated a third time in the
  essay's "Design issues in Max" section on audio/control semantics — a
  bridge the vault's own notes hadn't linked to each other until this
