Swedish-born philosopher, founding director of Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, known for formal work on anthropic reasoning and existential risk. His 2002 book *Anthropic Bias* (Routledge) framed the [[entity-reference-class-problem|reference class problem]] and the Self-Sampling Assumption / Self-Indication Assumption distinction — along with the "Presumptuous Philosopher" thought experiment — that much of the subsequent field measures itself against, including [[claim-reference-class-problem-dissolves-with-proportions-not-population-counts|Brewer, Lewis & Goodman (2026)]], whose own framework is built partly to repair a failure mode resembling Bostrom's Presumptuous Philosopher.
