Cambridge historian of science whose 2003 paper "Whigs and Stories: Herbert Butterfield and the Historiography of Science" (*History of Science* xli, pp.125-140) is the vault's Tier-2 anchor for what anti-Whig historians of science actually object to — "approaches that concentrate exclusively on origins, anticipations, and the great men who have fostered progress." He matters to this vault because that peer-reviewed description independently corroborates the pattern the vault names [[entity-precursorism|precursorism]], without himself using the word, and because he traces the 1970s reception that attached present-centredness critiques to [[entity-herbert-butterfield|Butterfield]]'s "Whig" label.

Jardine already appears in the vault's provenance trail before this page: the Whig-history claim-note's 2026-07-12 audit records that the Wikipedia article's history-of-science section "names Jardine, Blaas, and Mayr."

dates the Whig/Whiggish label's own entry into history-of-science usage to a

the mid-1970s — and that the word "Canguilhem" appears nowhere in his
