MIT linguist and, independent of this vault's MIT/Vietnam-era thread, one of
the most influential and independently notable figures in 20th-century
linguistics and public intellectual life. He matters to this specific thread
as a contemporaneous participant rather than a later critic: he sat as one of
the twenty-two members of the 1969 [[entity-draper-laboratory|Review Panel on
Special Laboratories]] (the "Pounds Panel") and filed his own dissenting
statement in its Final Report — a primary record of his position on MIT's
weapons research at the time, distinct from his better-known later public
commentary on the subject, and not yet read in full in this vault.
