A term from the sociology of science for a source that drops out of later citation not through error or neglect but through success: its finding became so completely absorbed into a field's common knowledge that citing it starts to read as redundant. Popularized for a general audience by [[entity-eugene-garfield|Eugene Garfield]]'s 1975 *Current Contents* essay, which illustrates it with Archimedes' calculation of pi — no modern mathematician cites him for the constant — and calls the fate being "obliterated into immortality." First flagged in this vault as an unpromoted "further lead" on 2026-07-11 (candidate bridge to [[backpropagation-gap]]), routed to a verification question that a mechanical check later marked "answered" without the substantive question ever being resolved; actually entered the vault on 2026-08-27 via a different chain, testing it against the vault's own [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]]-cluster pattern instead.

- 2026-09-02: First vault read of Merton's own words on OBI, rather than Garfield's 1975 secondary popularization — his 1988 paper defines it in one footnoted sentence and defers full development to *Social Theory and Social Structure* (1968, pp. 25–38), still unread. Tested against the backpropagation citation gap and found not to fit at all: OBI erases a source through its own success, while the backprop gap is eminence capturing credit from named, obscure independent discoverers — Merton's own Matthew Effect, not OBI.
