Career Naval Intelligence Division veteran turned naval-intelligence historian, author of *Very Special Admiral: The Life of Admiral J.H. Godfrey* (Hamish Hamilton, 1980) — [[entity-john-godfrey|Godfrey]]'s biographer — and of Godfrey's entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

He matters to this vault as the fullest secondary account of Godfrey's life, and, because he served in the NID himself, a biography that sits closer to primary testimony than an ordinary secondary life-and-times account — the most likely place a historian would already have checked whether Godfrey's own memoirs give an origin story for the Admiralty Code's grading scheme. Neither *Very Special Admiral* nor the ODNB entry (subscription-only) has been read by this vault.
