American Sinologist and China scholar whose English translation of
Charter 08 is the version used in nearly all English-language reporting
and scholarship on the document.

Matters to this vault as the translator behind the widely-cited English
text of [[entity-charter-08|Charter 08]], and as the source of the
contemporaneous account (his *New York Review of Books* postscript) of the
December 2008 police raid on [[entity-zhang-zuhua|Zhang Zuhua]]'s home the
night of the charter's release.
