18th-century French jurist, quoted by name in Adhémar Esmein's 1913 treatise as the author of a legal maxim on circumstantial evidence: "The half-proof… is no more conclusive than a half-truth, and for the same reason that two uncertainties cannot make a certainty, two half-proofs cannot make a full proof." Matters to this vault as the primary voice one layer behind its strongest current source for the non-additivity of imperfect proofs — a named jurist's own words, not a historian's paraphrase, preserved via Esmein's citation (*op. cit.*, t. 11, p. 116).
