Dutch control theorist who co-authored, with
[[entity-geert-jan-olsder|Geert Jan Olsder]], the 1976 paper "Population
planning: a distributed time optimal control problem" (in Jean Cea, ed.,
*Optimization Techniques: Modeling and Optimization in the Service of Man*,
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Springer-Verlag, pp. 721–735) — one of
the two Dutch works [[entity-susan-greenhalgh|Susan Greenhalgh]]'s
scholarship identifies, via footnote, as the source [[entity-song-jian|Song
Jian]] drew on for the population-control mathematics later adapted into
China's one-child policy.

Matters to this vault as the co-author, alongside Olsder, of the paper this
vault's current best identification names as A.E. Clark's unnamed "Dutch
authors" — a foundational technical figure behind a widely retold origin
story, entirely unresearched on his own account beyond this single
citation. No biographical detail beyond his name and this paper's
co-authorship has been located by any vault session.

## Updates

- 2026-08-24: A 2025 University of Twente obituary for
[[entity-huibert-kwakernaak|Huibert Kwakernaak]] names a "Rens Strijbos"
as arriving at Twente together with Kwakernaak in 1970 — the vault's
first candidate biographical fact about this entity beyond the 1976
co-authorship credit. The identification of "Rens" with "R.C.W." is not
yet confirmed against any source spelling out his full given names, so
the claim is held at seedling and routed to
  [[question-verify-strijbos-rens-nickname-matches-rcw-strijbos]] rather
  than treated as settled.
