Physicist (University of Rochester) whose two headline claims of
room-temperature superconductivity — carbonaceous sulfur hydride (2020) and
nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride (2023) — were both later retracted by
*Nature* following forensic critiques of the underlying susceptibility data.
Matters to this vault as the central subject of its data-forensics/retraction
cluster: he and his coauthors maintained the raw data supported the original
claims even as *Nature*'s editors and outside critics converged
independently on the same specific mechanism (an undisclosed,
non-reproducible background-subtraction procedure).
