Victorian English amateur astronomer (1826–1875) whose systematic daily sunspot observations at his private Redhill Observatory (1853–1861) established what is now called Carrington's law (which he conceptualised before Spörer independently arrived at the same pattern, hence "Spörer's law"), and whose observation of an intense solar flare on 1 September 1859 — the "Carrington Event" — remains the benchmark extreme space-weather event in solar physics. Carrington rotations, the standard system for tracking solar longitude over time, are also named for him.

Matters to this vault as the subject of a 2026 archival discovery: a previously unpublished whole-disk sunspot drawing dated 23 Dec 1870, found in the Royal Astronomical Society archives nine years after his documented observing career had ended, and the quantitative and biographical claims that discovery supports.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Carrington gets a page on the strength of one found drawing and one old priority dispute, not on the 1859 flare that most people would reach for first — the vault doesn't have a claim-note on the Carrington Event yet, so this hub is thinner on his most famous work than it should eventually be. Flagging that as a gap rather than pretending the page is complete.
