Mathematical physicist known for foundational work on the structure of general relativity, including the geometric and PDE-theoretic framework for how physical field equations determine well-posed initial-value problems.

Matters to this vault as the figure whose 1996 lecture notes, "Partial differential equations of physics" (Scottish Universities Summer School in Physics proceedings), supply the index conventions and much of the technical apparatus for [[entity-james-owen-weatherall|Weatherall]] and March's 2026 paper on minimally-coupled symmetric hyperbolic systems — a paper that explicitly leaves open a gap in his own existence argument (from Geroch's 2004 "Gauge, diffeomorphisms, initial-value formulation, etc.") rather than claiming to close it.
