Bell Labs engineer who invented the automatic adaptive equalizer (1965), a
tapped-delay-line filter that set its own tap gains by steepest-descent
minimization during a training period — breaking the ~2400 bps "distortion
barrier" that intersymbol interference had imposed on voiceband telephone
data. The vault treats him as the telecommunications-side node of a
multiple-discovery pair with Bernard Widrow: structurally the same family of
adjustable transversal filter learned by iterative gradient descent, reached
independently and for different ends in the same mid-1960s window. His own
paper's four-entry bibliography cites no Widrow-Hoff work; his own
first-person account of whether he knew of Widrow's work is not yet in the
vault — both of his most promising first-person sources (a 1999 IEEE oral
history, a 2006 retrospective essay) are named and findable but remain
access-blocked as of 2026-07-22.
