Historian of science whose 2017 book *Building the General Relativity and Gravitation Community During the Cold War* (Springer) mapped the institutional research centers — in Dublin, Cambridge, Hamburg, Berlin, Copenhagen, Bern, Paris, Leningrad, Warsaw, Syracuse, and elsewhere — that drove general relativity's mid-twentieth-century "Renaissance," and who co-developed that periodization and terminology with Alexander Blum and Jürgen Renn (not separately promoted here; their standing in this vault is as co-authors of the shared framework rather than independent contributors). Matters to this vault as the figure [[entity-bernadette-lessel|Bernadette Lessel]]'s 2026 paper measures its central claim against: his list of research centers and principal investigators is the roster her paper checks for textbook authorship, making his own book the evidentiary backbone beneath two of the vault's new claim-notes — though the vault has so far read that book only through Lessel's paraphrase of it, not directly.

- [[question-corroborate-lessel-2026-renaissance-centers-without-pi-textbook]] — open question on whether his book, read directly, confirms Lessel's account of the four exception centers.

- 2026-10-16: the center list in this page's own opening paragraph (Dublin, Cambridge, Hamburg, Berlin, Copenhagen, Bern, Paris, Leningrad, Warsaw, Syracuse) omits the four centers Lessel reports as textbook-less (Brussels, Stockholm, Haifa/Technion, Purdue) — but both lists trace back to Lessel's paraphrase of Lalli's book, not to two independent readings of it, so the omission is not itself evidence about what Lalli's own Appendix A actually contains. Flagged while researching [[question-corroborate-lessel-2026-renaissance-centers-without-pi-textbook]]; the appendix itself remains unread (paywalled).
