Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Independent Swedish scientific society, founded 1739, that selects and presents the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, and Economic Sciences — a decision-making role, not merely an affiliation, distinct from the Nobel Foundation, which writes and amends the governing statutes those prizes are awarded under.

Matters to this vault as the awarding body behind three independent claim clusters: the 2021 economics prize, the 2024 physics prize, and William Vickrey's 1996 economics prize — the last of which is also this vault's clearest documented case of the Academy's own ceremony rhetoric not doing what the Norwegian Nobel Committee's Peace Prize ceremony speeches routinely do (reach for institutional precedent when a laureate's circumstances are anomalous). Distinct from the Royal Swedish Academy's sister body in Oslo: the Norwegian Nobel Committee administers the Peace Prize alone, under separate statutes and a separate chain of authority (appointed by the Norwegian Storting, not the Academy).
