Hungarian-American engineer and mathematician (1930–2016) best known for
the Kalman filter, and for a 1960 duality result connecting multivariable
feedback control to multivariable feedback filtering.

Matters to this vault as the one documented, named point of technical
contact between Bell Labs classical control theory (Nyquist, Bode) and the
1950s–60s optimal-control lineage the vault credits as a mathematical
precursor to backpropagation: at the first IFAC Congress in Moscow (1960),
Kalman presented "On the General Theory of Control Systems," which
historian Stuart Bennett describes as showing "a deep and exact duality"
between the two traditions — a real bridge, but a later and external one,
made after Pontryagin's and Bellman's founding results and outside the
Kelley/Bryson chain itself.
