Soviet-Russian topologist (b. 1938), Fields Medalist (1970) for work in
algebraic and differential topology, and later author of a pointed online
memoir, *Pontryagin: my comments concerning the worst period of his
activity*, recounting his own eyewitness view of Steklov Institute politics
in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Matters to this vault as the sole eyewitness source behind
[[claim-pontryagin-used-committee-vote-to-help-block-margulis-1978-fields-medal-travel]],
the vault's sharpest reversal of Pontryagin's otherwise sympathetic
portrait — and, on a 2026-08-24 direct re-read of his memoir, an instructive
case of the gap between an eyewitness's decades-later *memory* of a document
("as far as I remember now") and a fresh transcription of it. His memoir
also names a Keldysh–Vinogradov–Shafarevich "triangle" as the deeper
institutional-politics thread behind the antisemitic campaign he describes,
casting [[entity-ivan-vinogradov|Ivan Vinogradov]] as the more central,
KGB-linked orchestrator — a lead not yet independently corroborated.
