Sewall Wright

Sewall Wright (1889–1988) was an American geneticist and one of the three founders of theoretical population genetics (alongside Fisher and Haldane), known for work on genetic drift, inbreeding coefficients, and the shifting-balance theory of evolution. His 1931 paper "Evolution in Mendelian Populations" (Genetics 16:97–159) established foundational results on allele-frequency change in finite populations under mutation and drift.

In this vault Wright matters as the antecedent-of-the-antecedent behind the Kimura–Crow lineage the citation-copying and cultural-drift cluster traces back to 1964: Simkin and Roychowdhury state outright that "the work of Kimura and Crow was based on the 1930 work of Wright" — their reference [72] for that sentence being, in fact, the 1931 Genetics paper, so the "1930" is the source's own slip — and in that same review paper ("Re-inventing Willis," arXiv physics/0601192 v3, published as Physics Reports 502 (2011) 1–35) they independently re-derive the Kimura–Crow 1964 allele-distribution problem and verify their own solution reduces to Wright's 1931 formula in the appropriate limit. That cross-check is the strongest technical corroboration the vault has yet found for the claim that Kimura and Crow (1964) is a genuine shared mathematical ancestor rather than a loose name-drop.
