Historian of control engineering at the University of Sheffield, author of "A Brief History of Automatic Control" (*IEEE Control Systems Magazine*, June 1996).

Matters to this vault as one of two independent control-theory historians (with [[entity-frank-l-lewis|Frank L. Lewis]]) whose own account of the field's genealogy roots 1950s–60s optimal control — including [[entity-lev-pontryagin|Pontryagin]]'s maximum principle, which Bennett credits explicitly as "the generalization of Hamilton's approach to geometric optics" — in [[entity-joseph-louis-lagrange|Lagrange]] and [[entity-william-rowan-hamilton|Hamilton]]'s 18th/19th-century calculus of variations, not in the Bell Labs frequency-response tradition (Nyquist, Bode) the vault had earlier hypothesized. His account is the vault's load-bearing Tier-2 source for that lineage across multiple bridge-check notes.
