Operations researcher (UC Berkeley IEOR) central to the vault's
backpropagation-origins priority-dispute cluster: author of the disputed
1973 IEEE TAC paper Schmidhuber's lineage chain cites as an intermediate
step toward backprop, author of the corroborating 1962 JMAA paper his own
retrospectives credit instead, and co-author (with Mizutani and Nishio,
2000) of the formal derivation showing MLP backprop as a special case of
the Kelley-Bryson optimal-control gradient formula. He functions in this
vault as source, claimant, and silent witness simultaneously — the same
figure supplying both the mathematics and the (contested) historical record
of it. Distinct from his brother [[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Hubert L.
Dreyfus]], the phenomenologist critic of symbolic AI — a deliberate
disambiguation, since both recur in adjacent but unrelated threads.
