Actuary, author of "The general theory of osculatory interpolation," *Transactions of the Actuarial Society of America*, 45, 202–265 (1944) — the systematization [[entity-isaac-schoenberg|Isaac Schoenberg]]'s 1946 spline papers credit as their direct predecessor and terminological reference point.

Schoenberg calls the 1944 paper "the valuable systematization of the subject" and states that his own work "will answer Mr. Greville's conjecture" from it ([[claim-schoenberg-1946-credits-jenkins-1926-greville-1944-as-osculatory-interpolation-predecessors]]). Both 1946 papers map their own vocabulary explicitly onto Greville's classification — Part B's footnote states "Greville's adjectives 'ordinary' and 'modified' agree respectively with our 'ordinary' and 'smoothing'" ([[claim-schoenberg-1946-adopts-accepted-actuarial-practice-for-ordinary-vs-smoothing-formulas]]) — making Greville, not a passing citation, the classification scheme Schoenberg's own formula taxonomy was built to align with.
