Computer scientist, blind since the age of fourteen, who built **AsTeR** (*Audio System for Technical Readings* — his 1994 Cornell PhD thesis) and **Emacspeak**, a full "audio desktop" now in the Smithsonian's permanent collection. His work rendered the *structure* of documents and mathematics as pitched, spatial, non-speech sound — raising the reading voice for a superscript, receding nested subexpressions into audible "distance" — rather than flattening an equation into a linear read-out.

Matters to this vault as the direct mechanical ancestor of later math-sonification systems and as a recurring load-bearing figure who, until this pass, had no hub despite grounding several notes.
