Vietnamese Buddhist monk who, on 11 June 1963, sat down in a Saigon
intersection and burned himself to death in protest at the South
Vietnamese government's persecution of Buddhists. Malcolm Browne's
photograph of the act travelled the world within days and was named World
Press Photo of the Year for 1963; President Kennedy is quoted as saying "no
news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as
that one," and the act helped bring down the Diem government within months.

Matters to this vault as the documented modern template for self-immolation
as a *political* tactic — distinct from the term's older religious sense of
ritual sacrifice — the single 1963 act that later movements are narrated as
adopting. That forward diffusion, into Cold War Soviet-bloc dissent (Ryszard
Siwiec 1968, Jan Palach 1969) and the Tibetan wave from 2009, is how the
vault's cross-time bridge is *narrated*; the transmission mechanism itself
is the weaker leg, resting on a Tier-3 memorial archive and an as-yet-unread
academic source (the `[unverified-mechanism]` flag on the diffusion note),
and so is reported ("inspired by"), not proven ("descended from").
