British psychiatrist and cyberneticist (1903–1972), a founding member of the Ratio Club and author of *Design for a Brain* (1952) and *An Introduction to Cybernetics* (1956), whose homeostat and formal treatment of self-organizing dynamical systems made him one of the field's foundational figures alongside — and, in Britain, largely independent of — [[entity-norbert-wiener|Norbert Wiener]].

Matters to this vault as the more proximate credited influence in [[entity-c-h-waddington|C. H. Waddington]]'s own 1957 chapter literally titled "The Cybernetics of Development": Waddington cites Ashby's two-dimensional dynamical-systems diagram (1952) for the formal picture behind his epigenetic landscape, while Wiener's name is absent from that chapter entirely ([[claim-waddington-1957-cybernetics-of-development-chapter-credits-ashby-not-wiener]]) — making Ashby a candidate alternate proximate-lineage figure (the British, Ratio-Club-adjacent strand of cybernetics) distinct from the American Wiener strand that secondary biography defaults to.
