Warren Ewens
Warren J. Ewens is an Australian-American mathematical population geneticist best known for the Ewens sampling formula, a foundational result in neutral-allele theory describing the distribution of allele frequencies in a sample under the infinite-alleles model.
In this vault Ewens recurs as the second antecedent Simkin and Roychowdhury co-credit, alongside Kimura and Crow (1964), as having independently derived (by a different method) the neutral-allele frequency result their citation-copying model reproduces — "A similar formula was previously derived... by Kimura and Crow (1964) and by Ewens (1964)." Unlike the Kimura–Crow leg, this is not a result Hahn and Bentley (2003) share: they cite a later Ewens paper (1972's "The sampling theory of selectively neutral alleles"), not the 1964 one, so the Ewens leg is not the lineage's shared ancestor the way Kimura and Crow is. Ewens is also, separately, the author of Genetics' own 2016 Centennial Classic commentary on the Kimura–Crow paper — located by search but, as of 2026-10-17, still unread by any vault session after a archive_page attempt returned a PMC reCAPTCHA interstitial.
Both the 1964 Ewens derivation and the 2016 commentary remain unread primaries; this page records Ewens's recurring role in the lineage, not an independent reading of his own work.
