Stanford GSB strategy scholar who carried [[entity-leigh-van-valen|Van Valen]]'s
Red Queen hypothesis out of evolutionary biology and into organizational theory,
arguing that organizations which survive competition grow stronger — but only
within the market context in which they succeeded. He matters to the vault as the
leading case of an evolutionary mechanism (constant coevolutionary pressure,
rivals raising each other's failure rates) imported into organizational strategy,
a cross-domain metaphor the vault tracks for both its insight and its
inflation-risk. His empirical demonstration was built industry by industry: the
founding 1996 test used Illinois banks, the computer-manufacturing evidence came
from later co-authored disk-drive work.
