American harpsichord maker (1922–2008) who co-founded a Boston workshop with [[entity-frank-hubbard|Frank Hubbard]] in 1949 to build harpsichords on reconstructed historical principles instead of the piano-derived "revival" style dominant at the time. The pair split their partnership in 1958 — Hubbard to Waltham, Dowd to a larger operation in Cambridge and later Paris — and are jointly credited with having "effected an early-music revolution" that ended the piano-frame paradigm's dominance.
