William J. McGuire (1925–2007) was an American social psychologist, trained
under Carl Hovland in the Yale Communication and Attitude Change program, who
formalized **inoculation theory** in two 1961 experiments — the finding that a
belief can be made resistant to persuasion by pre-exposure to a weakened form
of the counter-argument, analogous to a vaccine. He later popularized the idea
for a general audience under the title "Vaccine for brainwash" (*Psychology
Today*, 1970), and did foundational work on attitude structure and the
psychology of persuasion.
