19th-century Irish mathematician and physicist (1805–1865) whose
reformulation of mechanics via the Hamiltonian, and whose work connecting
mechanics to geometric optics, extended Lagrange's variational approach
into the form later generalized by 20th-century optimal control theory.

Matters to this vault co-equally with [[entity-joseph-louis-lagrange|Lagrange]]
as the specific mathematical source two independent control-theory
historians (Stuart Bennett, Frank L. Lewis) name as optimal control's actual
ancestor. Bennett credits [[entity-lev-pontryagin|Pontryagin]]'s 1956
maximum principle explicitly as "the generalization of Hamilton's approach
to geometric optics" — placing Hamilton, not Nyquist or Bode, as the
mathematical root one generation upstream of the Kelley/Bryson optimal-
control-to-backpropagation lineage.
