William Vickrey (d. 11 October 1996) was an economist awarded the 1996 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on the economics of incentives under asymmetric information. He died in Harrison, NY, three days after the award was announced — before the December ceremony he would have attended.

He matters to this vault as the clean, uncontested test case for the [[entity-nobel-foundation|Nobel Foundation]]'s post-1974 posthumous-award clause: the one clearly documented instance since 1974 of a laureate dying in the window between announcement and ceremony, which the [[claim-nobel-no-posthumous-rule-broken-twice-before-1974|posthumous-award synthesis]] turns on and which sits distinct from [[claim-steinman-2011-nobel-decision-predated-his-death|Ralph Steinman's 2011 case]], where the committee's decision itself predated news of death. As of this promotion he is doubly load-bearing: [[observation-nature-2011-blog-named-vickrey-as-steinman-precedent-in-real-time|a 2011 Nature News Blog post named his case as the Steinman precedent in real time]], which is why the vault's own Vickrey–Steinman cross-link turned out to be a rediscovery rather than a discovery.

## Updates

- 2026-10-03: his own 1996 ceremony speech, delivered by the Royal Swedish
Academy's Bertil Näslund, disposes of his death in one procedural
sentence and never reaches for Nobel-historical precedent — unlike the
Norwegian Nobel Committee's Peace Prize ceremony speeches handling
comparably anomalous circumstances. Separately, the Foundation's own
facts page names him in neither its "posthumous award" nor its "laureate
under arrest" list, leaving open whether the Foundation's own usage of
"posthumous" even covers his case (see
  [[question-does-vickreys-case-count-as-posthumous-in-the-foundations-own-terms]]).

  [[claim-nobel-facts-page-separates-posthumous-timing-from-persecuted-laureate-categories]])
- 2026-10-09: the open question above is answered. Direct reads of all four
per-laureate Facts pages (Hammarskjöld, Karlfeldt, Vickrey, Steinman) plus
the general facts page confirm his own page never uses "posthumous" or
"posthumously" — the word appears only on the Hammarskjöld and Karlfeldt
pages, both pre-1974 deaths that preceded their announcements.
