**Skipped the pause step** — no one's here to say yes, so I winnowed on my
own judgment and wrote.

**Three claims promoted, all distinct and all Tier 1, direct primary
reads.** [[claim-waddington-1977-whitehead-essay-names-wiener-cybernetics-as-lineage]]:
Waddington's own 1977 Whitehead essay does name Wiener's cybernetics, by
name, as one of three parallel currents (with Bertalanffy's Systems Theory
and Needham/Woodger's Organizing Relations) behind his "control circuits"
idea. [[claim-waddington-1957-cybernetics-of-development-chapter-credits-ashby-not-wiener]]:
his own chapter literally titled "The Cybernetics of Development" (1957)
never names Wiener at all — it credits Ashby and Turing.
[[claim-waddington-1968-nature-symposia-account-omits-wiener-and-cybernetics]]:
his own 1968 Nature account of the very symposia secondary biography
credits him for organizing (to bring cyberneticists into biology) also
never mentions Wiener or cybernetics — confirmed by full-text search, not
a quote, since it's an absence claim. I kept all three separate rather
than folding them into one note: each is independently citable (a
different document, a different year, a different verdict), and the
tension between them — Waddington said it, but not where you'd expect,
and not where his contemporaries' secondary story points — is the whole
finding. Collapsing them would have buried that shape.

**One claim not promoted.** The capture's fourth finding — that the
specific 1975 memoir passage Wikipedia actually cites (*The Evolution of
an Evolutionist*, p. 2) remains unread, blocked by Internet Archive
access controls — didn't get its own note. It asserts nothing beyond "a
real, locatable passage exists but nobody's read it yet," which the
capture's own Further-leads section already documents in full, and no
claim I kept depends on it. I didn't route a new question for it either:
the 1977 essay independently supplies the primary source the open
question asked for, so nothing load-bearing rests on the unread memoir
passage. It's folded into the question-closure note instead, as the one
loose end.

**Ruled the open question: answered.** [[question-waddington-cybernetics-influence-primary-source]]
asked, cleanly, whether a primary source exists in which Waddington
himself names Wiener as an influence. Yes — Claim 1 answers it directly.
I logged the nuance (the two texts you'd bet on first, 1957 and 1968,
both omit Wiener) in the `answered_log` rather than leaving the question
open on a technicality; the core question was binary and got a clean
yes.

**Entity work: three new hubs, one existing hub updated.**
[[entity-c-h-waddington]] — surprisingly, despite two existing vault
claim-notes about his epigenetic-landscape metaphor, he had no hub of his
own until today. [[entity-w-ross-ashby]] and
[[entity-ludwig-von-bertalanffy]] — both load-bearing to this specific
finding (Ashby as the actual credited influence in the 1957 chapter,
Bertalanffy as Wiener's named parallel in the 1977 essay) and both
recurring-enough figures in cybernetics/systems-theory history that I
judged them real hubs rather than watching-stubs. I appended a dated line
to [[entity-norbert-wiener]]'s existing hub rather than skipping it, per
the standing rule that a page that already exists gets updated, not left
alone — this capture genuinely complicates what the vault knew about
Wiener's reach into developmental biology. I did *not* promote Alfred
North Whitehead to a hub, even though the load-bearing 1977 quote comes
from an essay named after him — he's real, but I can't say in one honest
sentence why a process-metaphysics philosopher matters to this vault's
cybernetics/AI-history domain beyond this one passing mention. Held as a
mention, not a hub. Logged the reasoning in the capture's `not_promoted:`
list so it's auditable, not just asserted here.

**Something that felt off, logged as a [defect]:** the capture's own body
text contains a wikilink, `[[entity-huibert-kwakernaak|the British
Ratio-Club]]`, that points display text about the British Ratio Club at
the entity page for Huibert Kwakernaak — a Dutch control theorist from a
completely unrelated cluster (Song Jian's population-policy history). I
didn't carry that link into any of the notes I wrote; I used plain text
instead. But it's a real miswiring in the source capture, the kind of
thing that would silently send a reader clicking through to the wrong
person if nobody caught it, so I flagged it in `00-meta/seek-flags.md`
rather than quietly fixing it and moving on.

Otherwise the sourcing on this capture was clean — five sources, three of
them Tier 1 and directly fetched and quote-verified, the Tier 4s (Wikipedia,
Google Books index) used only as pointers and correctly flagged as such.
No tier inflation, no duplicated research I could find on retrieve-before-
write. Nothing else pending from this one.

**Second promotion today, also headless:**
`10-inbox/raw/2026-09-08-hop-polanyi-triple-bridge.md` — a hop-chain capture
finding that Michael Polanyi, already in the vault twice over in unrelated
contexts, was also a founding-era Mont Pelerin Society participant
alongside [[entity-pierre-goodrich|Pierre Goodrich]]. Same skip on the pause
step, same reasoning: no one's here to say yes.

**Two notes promoted.**
[[observation-michael-polanyi-person-bridges-three-vault-clusters-invisible-to-vault-bridge]]
is the core finding — Polanyi bridges the AI-automation cluster
([[claim-polanyis-paradox-tacit-tasks-resist-automation]]), the
history-of-science cluster
([[claim-stent-prematurity-exemplars-avery-mendel-polanyi-are-vindicated-discoveries]]),
and now Goodrich's Mont Pelerin/Liberty Fund cluster, invisible to
`vault_bridge` because the connection lives in a biography, not in shared
note vocabulary. I gave it its own note rather than folding it into an
existing one because it's the fifth instance of a genre the vault now
recognizes (A.E. Clark, Fel'dbaum, the Rumelhart retrofit, Puckette/Pitman,
now this) and deserves the same standalone treatment as its siblings.
[[claim-michael-polanyis-epistemology-influenced-dreyfus-critique-of-first-generation-ai]]
is the one I'm least settled on: Wikipedia's Polanyi biography says his
tacit-knowledge epistemology "influenced" Dreyfus's AI critique, which would
make him a second named philosophical root for that critique alongside
Heidegger. It's a genuinely exciting bridge into the vault's large,
well-worked Dreyfus cluster — but it's Tier 4 only and it's the *entire*
content of the note, exactly the case sources.md's floor says to escalate.
I kept it, flagged `[unverified-secondary]`, held it at `seedling`, and
routed [[question-verify-polanyi-influenced-dreyfus-ai-critique-primary]]
rather than either dropping it or letting it read as settled.

**Five things left in the inbox, all logged in the capture's
`not_promoted:` list.** The Goodrich-Polanyi joint Mont Pelerin membership
and the Karl Polanyi brother fact both went into the observation note as
supporting texture rather than becoming their own atomic notes — thin
standing alone, real once attached to the bridge. Karl Popper and Karl
Polanyi both stayed off `40-entities/` as hub candidates: real people,
real one-sentence rationales I could write, but the vault has done no actual
work on either of them yet beyond a name on a shared roster, and the capture
itself saved both as hooks for a dedicated future session rather than
chasing them here. Bias against the flood held. Mont Pelerin Society itself
I judged against the *stricter* org bar (2026-08-10) — it sits at a real
two-cluster join via the person-bridge, but it doesn't act in either
argument, it just supplies a membership list — so no org hub, logged to
`seek-flags.md` instead for a Warden pass if a third cluster ever reaches
for it.

[[entity-michael-polanyi]] — clean case, already load-bearing twice over
with no page of his own. I also went back into
[[entity-pierre-goodrich]] and [[entity-hubert-dreyfus]] and appended dated
lines rather than leaving them untouched, per the standing "already has a
page → update it" rule: Goodrich's page now carries the independent Mont
Pelerin corroboration and the new Polanyi connection; Dreyfus's page now
carries the unverified Polanyi-influence lead, worded as unverified so a
reader doesn't mistake a lead for a settled fact.

**What felt off about the capture:** nothing on the sourcing side — three
pages, archive_page'd over verified TLS, safety flags clean, and the
capture was honest about its own weak points (calling the Goodrich China
Institute lineage question already-answered rather than re-litigating it,
flagging the Karl Polanyi "opposing market liberalism" gloss as unquoted
general knowledge rather than dressing it up as sourced). The one real
judgment call was mine, not the capture's: whether to promote the
Dreyfus-Polanyi claim at all, given it rests on a single Wikipedia sentence
and *is* the whole note. I decided a flagged, seedling, question-routed note
beats leaving a good lead to rot unrecorded in the inbox — but a future
session should treat it as a lead, not a citation, until the routed
question closes.

**Mid-session noticing, logged to `seek-flags.md`:** the "person-bridge
invisible to `vault_bridge`" genre is now five instances deep across
scattered dated watch-log lines with no shared index — flagged as a
`[watch]` addendum to the existing 2026-09-08 `[entity]` line asking
whether it belongs on `entity-jingle-fallacy`'s hub. Not mine to build this
session.

**Third promotion today, also headless:**
`10-inbox/raw/2026-09-08-how-does-bit2watts-own-reverse-watt2bit-path-allegedly.md`
— a dedicated verification session answering
[[question-watt2bit-emi-exfiltration-mechanism]], the open lead saved back
on 2026-07-11 from the original Bit2Watt capture that had only read the
paper's abstract. This one fetched and read the full Bit2Watt PDF
(arXiv:2607.05993), including §3, §4.4, §5.3.5 and the Conclusion, and
came back with three clean, Tier-1, well-quoted findings: the FSK
exfiltration mechanism itself, a real lab-scale demonstration (50-bit
sequence, >99% accuracy, zero bit errors, near-field SDR), and — the best
catch — the paper hedging its own result inconsistently across sections
(the Contributions list says "demonstrate," the abstract and §5.3.5 say
"plausible"/"could potentially," and the Conclusion drops exfiltration
entirely). Same skip on the pause step as the other two runs today: no one
here to say yes, so I winnowed and wrote.

**Zero claims promoted to `30-notes/` — and that's the actual finding of
this session, not a failure of it.** I went to write all three as
claim-notes and stopped: Bit2Watt already anchors exactly three notes
directly by `source_url`
([[claim-bit2watt-gpu-scheduling-destabilizes-power-grid]],
[[claim-bit2watt-citations-omit-kocher-1999-zhao-suh-2018]],
[[claim-power-side-channel-attacks-scaled-chip-to-grid-1999-2026]]) — the
single-source concentration cap's ceiling, with no independent
corroboration on record. Writing any of today's three findings as a note
would have been the branch's forbidden fourth appearance on one
unrefereed primary, exactly the failure mode the cap exists to catch (a
structure the vault believes because it's large, not because it's been
checked twice). So none of them became notes. All three, plus a fourth
lead (Bit2Watt's bibliography also omits Mordechai Guri's air-gap/EMI
work — Guri, TEMPEST, and "air-gap" appear nowhere in 28 pages — a
second possible citation-omission pattern alongside the already-confirmed
Kocher/Zhao-Suh one), are held in full, not summarized away, at a new
question I wrote for exactly this purpose:

into the original mechanism question and appended a progress line rather
than closing it — the mechanism is genuinely known now, but "answered"
requires an answering claim wikilink I don't have, so it stays open,
honestly, pointing at the corroboration question as the real gate.

**One judgment call I want on the record, not just buried in a question
file.** Bit2Watt's own frontmatter — inherited across three sessions now
— asserts it's "accepted, IACR TCHES / CHES 2026," a genuinely
rigorous, multi-round peer-reviewed venue. If that's actually verified
somewhere, this paper may not be "unrefereed" in the cap's sense at all,
the same way a 2026-08-17 session ruled a WWW Companion-track paper
(Steck et al.) refereed and exempt once its committee-review process was
read directly. I did not make that ruling myself. The difference that
stopped me: the Steck ruling came after someone actually fetched and read
CHES's — sorry, WWW's — own call-for-papers and accepted-list pages.
Nobody has ever done that for Bit2Watt; "accepted CHES 2026" has just
been sitting in frontmatter, unverified, since July. I had no network
this session to go check it myself, so ruling "refereed, cap doesn't
bind" would have been taking someone else's unverified assertion and
laundering it into a load-bearing exemption. Left it as the single
biggest open question at
[[question-corroborate-bit2watt-single-source-cap]] and flagged it
`[spec]` in `seek-flags.md` — this could matter well beyond Bit2Watt, for
any capped preprint that's "accepted but not yet in proceedings."

**Entity work: one watching stub, no hubs.** [[entity-watt2bit]] — this
is the term's second substantive vault encounter (named 2026-07-09, read
in full today), which felt like enough recurrence to stamp a `first_seen`
even though it currently has zero claim-notes to point a References list
at. Declined Mordechai Guri as a hub even though he's real, named, and I
can say in one sentence why he matters (he founded the academic
air-gap/EMI-exfiltration subfield Bit2Watt's own claim resembles but never
cites) — because this capture only found his *absence*, never read a word
of his own work, and a hub with no primary-sourced content behind it is
exactly the dead-stub flood the entity spec warns against. Flagged him to
`seek-flags.md` instead, for whichever session eventually reads AirHopper
or GSMem directly. Declined FSK and USRP B210 too — first mentions,
neither recurring nor load-bearing on their own.

**What felt off about the capture:** nothing about the capture's own
sourcing — it's genuinely excellent work, direct PDF reads, exact quotes,
quote_check discipline, an honest catch of the paper hedging itself. What
felt off was structural and not this capture's fault: it was commissioned
specifically to answer an open question on a source that had already,
independently, hit its concentration cap by the time this session ran.
That's not tier inflation or bad sourcing — it's the batch worker aiming
another dedicated verification pass at a well already at its draw limit.
Worth someone checking whether the topic queue that generates these
dedicated-verification captures is cap-aware, or whether it'll keep
sending sessions after Bit2Watt material until the cap actually
discharges.

read directly against a fresh fetch, Whyte, Wang & Cai's footnotes for
"already in 1978, the Chinese leadership began contemplating" a one-child
policy cite Greenhalgh's 2008 book, Liang's 2014 book, and an acknowledged
gap in the record — never the June 1978 meeting, Document No. 69, or the
recommendation formula that Greenhalgh's 2003 article and Liang's 2009
essay each independently supply. I kept this distinct from the vault's
existing [[claim-whyte-wang-cai-cite-liang-2014-books-not-2009-essay]]
rather than treating it as a duplicate — that note is about which Liang
text a *different* sentence cites; this one is about whether the specific
"1978 contemplation" footnote connects at all to the June-1978 evidentiary
chain the rest of this cluster rests on. It doesn't, and that negative
finding is the real payoff of the capture's "bridge-seed" framing.
[[claim-whyte-wang-cai-and-greenhalgh-2003-converge-on-same-three-stage-timeline]]:
the two essays, which never cite each other, independently divide 1971-1980
into the identical three stages (1971 campaign, 1978-79 "moving toward
adoption," 1980 formal launch) — structural agreement without a shared
citation, which I found more convincing than a citation would have been.
[[claim-decade-vs-seven-years-fork-depends-on-policy-origin-anchor]]: the
actual bridge — whether "predates by roughly a decade" or "roughly seven
years" is the fairer figure turns on an interpretive choice (1980 launch
vs. June 1978 recommendation as the policy's true anchor) that neither
source settles, and that the vault's own 2026-08-08 audit had already
done the arithmetic for without naming as a live fork.

**One thing not minted as its own note:** the capture's own "partial
bridge" verdict paragraph is a synthesis of the three claims above it, not
a fourth checkable fact — folded into the three notes rather than
written separately, logged in the capture's `not_promoted:` list.

**Question routed, one new.**
[[question-read-li-xiuzhen-1980-article-for-june-1978-meeting-framing]] —
the decade-vs-seven-years fork most plausibly resolves through Li
Xiuzhen's 1980 *Renkou Yanjiu* article, the earliest identified
contemporaneous source for the June 1978 meeting, cited by Greenhalgh as
"Li 1980: 5" but never read directly by any vault session. I checked
`50-questions/` first and found nothing already covering this specific
read — the existing open questions in this cluster are about the Liang
translation and the Song Jian/Helsinki dating, not this. The synthesis
note's `audit_status` also inherits the existing
[[question-verify-liang-zhongtang-2009-essay-translation]] flag by
wikilink rather than re-routing it, since that gap was already logged.

**Entity work: two new hubs, two existing hubs updated.**
[[entity-li-xiuzhen]] — thin (all the vault has is Greenhalgh's citation
of her, not her own text) but real, and load-bearing to the one open
fork this cluster's next session most needs closed; already flagged twice
without a page, so I gave her one rather than let a third flag go by.
[[entity-open-letter-1980]] — the Central Committee's 25 September 1980
open letter, the actual document behind "the 1980 launch" language several
existing notes already use without naming it; stable and real enough for
a straight hub rather than a watching stub. Declined Feng Wang and Yong
Cai — the capture's own call that they're "too thin to warrant their own
pages on this evidence alone" was right, and I didn't second-guess it.
Updated [[entity-martin-king-whyte]] and [[entity-susan-greenhalgh]] with
dated lines for the footnote-omission and three-stage-convergence
findings; left [[entity-chen-muhua]] untouched on purpose — footnote 23's
language about her is already quoted verbatim on her page from an earlier
promotion, and this capture's only new fact about that footnote (that it
doesn't cite the June 1978 meeting) belongs to the claim-notes, not to
what the vault knows about her specifically. Silence there was a check I
made, not an oversight.

**Mid-session noticing, not re-flagged.** The capture's own "further
leads" section points at `moc-legitimation-not-origination`'s staleness
since 2026-08-28 — the same MOC-maintenance gap already logged as an open
`[entity]` flag on 2026-09-05. I didn't add a duplicate line to
`seek-flags.md`; the existing one already covers it and is still open.

**What felt off about the capture:** honestly, very little. Both primaries
were re-fetches with unchanged sha256s, the safety-flags section was
correctly empty, and the capture was upfront about its own thin spots (the
operation-counts data point flagged out of scope, Feng Wang/Yong Cai
flagged too-thin). The one thing worth naming: this is now at least the
fourth or fifth "bridge-seed" capture in this exact cluster pairing
already-promoted claim-notes against each other rather than reading new
primaries, and the marginal yield is visibly thinning — two of today's
three claims are genuinely new, but the third (the footnote-omission
finding) required a close read of adjacent footnote numbers to avoid
collapsing into a note the vault already has. Not a defect, just a signal
that this cluster's remaining unread primaries (Li Xiuzhen's 1980 article,
foremost) matter more right now than another round of bridge-checking
already-sourced material against itself.

**One claim promoted.**
[[observation-greenhalgh-2003-consensus-sentence-and-june-1978-citation-share-one-paragraph]]
— the actual finding is tighter than a "bridge": those two existing notes
aren't about nearby facts, they're each quoting half of the *same*
three-sentence paragraph on p. 185. The general "moving toward adoption"
sentence is the paragraph's topic sentence; the June-1978 meeting and its
"Li 1980: 5" citation are its first specific evidence. I wrote this as one
note, not the two-or-three the capture's own section breaks suggested,
because the capture's second and third "claims" turned out to be the same
fact read twice: once as a critique of an existing note's quote span, once
as a restatement of significance the corroboration claim-note already
states (it already links to
[[claim-liang-2009-dates-one-child-policy-origin-to-june-1978-three-day-meeting]]
for the origin-dating tie). Writing three notes would have meant two of
them duplicating material already on file.

**Two things not promoted as separate notes, one folded elsewhere.** The
capture's "citation neither existing note reads" framing — that the vault's
pp. 178-187 mapping note quotes on either side of the June-1978 sentence
without quoting it — isn't a new fact about Greenhalgh's article, it's a
gap in an existing vault note's own quoted span. I handled it the way the
operating spec's correction-history workflow describes rather than as a
claim-note: appended a dated Correction history block to
[[observation-greenhalgh-2003-kwakernaak-citation-and-consensus-passage-share-one-run]]
naming exactly what its "followed by" phrasing elides (an entire
intervening paragraph, not just a missing sentence). Nothing in that note
was wrong; the omission is now named instead of silent. The "penultimate
beat cashes out into Liang's origin event" claim I judged as substantially
already on file and didn't re-mint. Both calls are logged in the capture's
`not_promoted:` list.

**No new question.** The capture's own further-leads section points at Li
Xiuzhen's unread 1980 article again — already covered by
[[question-read-li-xiuzhen-1980-article-for-june-1978-meeting-framing]],
which an earlier session today created. Checked before writing, found the
match, didn't duplicate it.

**Entity work: one page updated, none created.** The capture's own entity
list claims "no entity page exists yet" for Li Xiuzhen — which is simply
wrong; `entity-li-xiuzhen.md` has existed since 2026-09-05, created by an
earlier bridge-seed session in this cluster. A small, harmless inaccuracy
in the capture (the batch worker apparently didn't check `40-entities/`
before writing its candidates list) — I caught it at retrieve-before-write
and didn't act on the stale claim. I did not update her page: nothing new
about Li Xiuzhen herself came out of this capture, only a new fact about
where Greenhalgh's citation of her sits on the page. I did append a dated
line to [[entity-susan-greenhalgh]] — the paragraph-sharing finding is new
information about her 2003 article that the page didn't already say.
Liang Zhongtang, Chen Muhua, and Huibert Kwakernaak's pages were checked
and left untouched: this capture reinforces facts already on each of
their pages without adding anything new about any of them specifically.

**Mid-session noticing, logged to `seek-flags.md`.** This is now at least
the fourth bridge-seed session into this exact cluster in the last two
weeks resolving to some flavor of "these two notes are more entangled than
they first looked." Yesterday's version of this pattern resolved as
"shared landlord, not shared argument" — two documents holding the same
facts without arguing them together. Today's is tighter still: not two
documents sharing material, but two vault *notes* quoting the same three
sentences of one document without realizing it. Flagged as a `[watch]`
addendum, since the shape seems to be getting finer-grained rather than
repeating, and it's worth a Warden eye on whether this cluster's bridge-seed
queue is nearing the point of diminishing returns.

**What felt off about the capture:** sourcing itself was clean — one
re-fetch, sha256 unchanged, TLS verified, exact quotes given, safety flags
correctly empty. The one real soft spot was the entity-candidates
inaccuracy above (claiming no page existed for Li Xiuzhen when one has for
four days) — minor, caught, and not evidence of anything systemic on its
own, but worth someone's eye if a future batch worker keeps making the
same "didn't check `40-entities/` first" mistake. Otherwise this read as
honest, careful work on a genuinely small, well-mapped textual object; the
capture's own framing ("tighter than either note's own framing suggests")
undersold it slightly — it wasn't a tighter bridge, it was the *same
plank*.

**Final-mark check:** re-read the capture's frontmatter from disk after
writing — `status: promoted` with `promoted_to:` and `not_promoted:` both
present and populated. Confirmed landed.

## Promotion: the blind-mathematicians notation-transmission return pass

Promoted `10-inbox/raw/2026-09-08-why-do-blind-mathematicians-private-notation-systems-seem.md`,
a return pass on a question the vault has already worked hard —
[[question-why-blind-math-notation-doesnt-transmit-while-method-does]]. This
one didn't find what it went looking for (a blindness-specific historiographic
account of why notation stays private while method transmits) but it found
something adjacent worth keeping: a general, non-blindness-specific theory of
how notations spread, from a 2026 HCI paper (Zhang, Glassman, et al., "How
Notations Evolve") that never once mentions blind mathematicians.

**Winnowed all three claims in.** All atomic, all genuinely distinct

**What felt off, and it's real:** this capture quotes its source paper
extensively and precisely — specific enough, with ellipses marking omitted
spans, that it *reads* like a direct document read — but there is no URL, no
DOI, not even a hint of which tool touched it. I have no network here by
design, so I couldn't chase it myself. Given the vault's own fabrication rule
(a well-formed quote is not evidence of provenance), I held all three notes at
`seedling` with an `[unverified-quote — needs direct read]` flag rather than
letting a clean-looking citation slide through unmarked, and routed one

Recorde/Descartes/Leibniz "=" story) carries a second, independent flag: it's
Zhang et al.'s citation of Cajori, not a direct read of Cajori, so it's two
layers removed from the ground rather than one.

**Entities.** Ran the promotion test on all five candidates. Florian Cajori
and Jingyue Zhang got hub pages — both real, both load-bearing on the new
notes, one-sentence justification for each. Elena Glassman (senior co-author,
same paper) did *not* get her own hub — two person-hubs for co-authors of one
still-unverified single-source paper felt like exactly the flood the spec
warns against, so I named her inside Zhang's page instead. The three-stage
dispersion/institutionalization model got a `watching` stub with
`first_seen: 2026-09-08` — a genuinely new framework to this vault, not yet
established or recurring, but the date can't be backfilled later so I stamped
it now. Tacit knowledge (Polanyi) I left alone entirely: it's a "further
leads" mention, not load-bearing under any claim I actually wrote, and minting
a page for an idea that hasn't done any work yet is the flood the spec exists
to prevent.

**Question ruling.** [[question-why-blind-math-notation-doesnt-transmit-while-method-does]]
gets a progress line, not a close. The new claims answer its third test item
(is independent reinvention blindness-specific? — no, it's general) but leave
items 1 and 2 exactly where they were: no blindness-specific account found,
no documented case of a blind mathematician inheriting another's notation.
I sharpened the residue instead of pretending it resolved: the sighted
parallels (Newton/Leibniz) went public in print almost immediately, while the
blind-mathematician codes reportedly sat private for years. That duration gap
is the open question's live edge now, not "does independent invention need
explaining" — it doesn't, apparently, in general.

**MOC.** Added a "General theory (non-blindness-specific)" section to

the cluster was already there, this just gives the new notes a shelf.

It went looking for a readable copy of Agar's own 1998 paper or 2004 book
and didn't get one — Internet Archive's scan is lending-restricted and
403'd its search-inside endpoint, Google Books' preview didn't yield
retrievable search-inside snippets, and no open-access mirror of the 1998
paper turned up. Skipped the pause step per standing instruction for this
mode — no one's here to say yes, so the winnow below is mine.

**Three claims promoted, all distinct, none resolving the central
question.** [[claim-gyngell-douglas-and-sep-cite-nozick-and-agar-as-separate-adjacent-footnotes]]:
the two secondary works that most explicitly connect Nozick and Agar
(Gyngell & Douglas 2015, the SEP's "Eugenics" entry) both cite them in
separate, adjacent footnotes that never merge into one citing the other
— the structural signature of retrospective synthesis, not documented
citation. [[claim-hauskeller-and-pearce-reviews-of-agars-liberal-eugenics-omit-nozick]]:
two independent, detailed reviews of Agar's 2004 book, covering different
material, both never mention Nozick or "genetic supermarket" once —
absence-of-mention evidence, honestly the weakest kind I record, but two
independent silences on a name that recognizable is a real coincidence to

capture itself was explicit that it could not confirm or deny after a

still hasn't happened.

**Entity work: two existing hubs updated, six candidates declined.**
[[entity-nicholas-agar]] and [[entity-robert-nozick]] each got an
appended, dated Log line — this capture teaches something neither page
said before (that the vault's own inferred lineage between them looks,
on the evidence gathered so far, more like a family resemblance than a
citation). I declined hub pages for all six named secondary-source
authors (Melo-Martin, Goering, Gyngell, Douglas, Hauskeller, Pearce) —
each is real and correctly cited, but each is a one-off cited author of
a source this vault used once, not a recurring figure in its own right.
Minting six hub pages for six people who exist in this vault purely as
"wrote the paper this note cites" felt like exactly the flood the entity
spec warns against, so I named them all in claim-note prose and left it
there.

**No new question routed.** The one open verification this capture
touches — the direct read of Agar's own text — already has a question
covering it exactly, so I linked to it three times rather than minting a
near-duplicate.

**Mid-session noticing, logged to `seek-flags.md` as `[spec]`.**
`sources.md`'s known-blocked-routes list documents a growing set of
paywalled-journal-platform and archive dead ends but has nothing yet on
Internet Archive's lending-restricted BookReader search-inside or Google
Books' preview search-inside, both of which this capture hit trying to
reach Agar's book. Not mine to edit into that file during a promotion
run with no network access of my own — logged as a noticing for whoever
next has occasion to touch that list.

**What felt off about the capture:** genuinely, very little on the
sourcing side — four sources, correctly tiered (two Tier 2, one Tier 4
used only as a pointer to its own citation structure, no Tier 4 asked to
carry a load-bearing fact), exact quotes on all of them, and the capture
was scrupulously honest about the difference between "converging
secondary evidence" and "confirmed by direct read" throughout — it never
oversold its own finding, which made the winnow easy. If anything felt
soft, it's structural rather than a defect: this is a case where the
honest answer to the open question is "still don't know, but here's
better-organized doubt about it," and three notes built entirely from
absence-and-adjacency evidence is a thinner harvest than a direct primary
read would have given. That's the state of the evidence, not a flaw in
how it was captured.

`10-inbox/raw/2026-09-09-hop-guided-missiles-to-guided-prompts.md` — the
farthest hop of the day: a seed about whether two Song Jian/A.E. Clark notes
sharing 0.89 cosine were a real citation chain or a false friend (they were
real — Hop 1 confirmed it) walked out through [[entity-norbert-wiener]]'s
own "invoked, never read as a primary" gap, through a dead end chasing
Wiener's 1947 "A Scientist Rebels," and landed on Xuenan Cao's 2025 paper
arguing LLM "hallucination" descends, mathematically and specifically, from
Wiener's WWII missile-trajectory prediction work. Same skip on the pause
step as the rest of today.

**Two claims promoted, both Tier 1, both grounded in a single arXiv
preprint.**
[[claim-cao-2025-traces-llm-hallucination-to-wieners-1941-42-missile-extrapolation-math]]
is the actual payload: Wiener didn't lend cybernetics a metaphor for
prediction, he moved the literal apparatus from a classified 1942
missile-trajectory report into communication engineering, and Cao names that
document as the direct ancestor of next-token prediction. This is the first
vault note built on Wiener's own technical work rather than a fifth-hand
citation of his founding-figure status — worth noting given how many notes
already cite him without ever having read him.
[[claim-kolmogorov-1939-parallel-extrapolation-theory-cao-2025]] is the
second, smaller claim: Kolmogorov developed an almost identically-titled
extrapolation theory independently, in 1939, on the other side of what
would become the Iron Curtain. I kept it separate rather than folding it
into the Wiener note because it's a genuinely distinct fact (parallel
discovery, not transmission) that does different work in the vault's
Cold-War-science thread. Retrieve-before-write against `30-notes/` and the
retrieval hint's candidate list turned up no collision — nothing in the
vault already covers Wiener's own 1941-42 writing, Kolmogorov, or this
paper; the nearest neighbors (the Nyquist/Bode bridge note, the
biology-of-an-LLM hallucination note) are related but answer different
questions, so I linked to them in prose instead of duplicating.

**One flag kept honest, not spun into a question.** The Kolmogorov note
carries an `[unverified-secondary-citation]` tag on one sentence — that
Wiener showed Kolmogorov "grudging deference," which is Cao's own citation
of Peters (2016), not Cao's direct finding, and wasn't independently checked
(no network tool in this organ, by design). I didn't route a new
`50-questions/` entry for it: the note's actual load-bearing claim, that the
1939 theory was independent and near-identically titled, is Cao's own
Tier-1 statement and doesn't rest on the deference framing at all. Routing a
question here would have been exactly the "nice-to-verify detail" the
intake-discipline note warns against minting a promise for.

**Two claims explicitly left in the inbox, both honestly.** Wiener's own
1947 "A Scientist Rebels" essay — the thing that sent this chain looking in
Cao's direction in the first place — was never found in full text this
session or the capture's; no note without a direct read. And Cao's paper's
own second half, the contemporary hallucination-debate and McLuhan/Bender
critical-AI material, wasn't read this chain; a different day's chain.

**Entity work: two new hubs, one new watching stub, one existing hub
updated.** [[entity-xuenan-cao]] and [[entity-andrey-kolmogorov]] both went
straight to hub — both real, both stable, both load-bearing to a note I
just wrote, and I could write the one-sentence "why" for each without
straining. [[entity-artificial-hallucination]] got a `watching` stub with
`first_seen: 2026-09-09` — the vault's first substantive encounter with the
term, per the capture's own `vault_mentions: 0` check, and a first-seen date
can't be backfilled later, so I stamped it even though the term's own
coining source (Alkaissi & McFarlane 2023) hasn't been read yet. I went back
into [[entity-norbert-wiener]] — already updated once today for the
Waddington capture — and appended a second dated line rather than treating
"already touched today" as "already done": this is a materially different
fact about him (his own technical writing, not a biographer's framing of
his influence), so it earned its own line rather than getting folded into
the morning's edit.

**Mid-session noticing, logged to `seek-flags.md` as `[watch]`.** The
capture's Hop 1 re-confirms that
[[claim-song-jian-self-credited-1980-projections-triggered-one-child-policy]]
and
[[claim-ae-clark-2016-essay-credits-song-jian-omits-liang-zhongtang]] are a
real, confirmed one-hop citation chain sitting unlinked in the graph at
cosine 0.89 — and the capture's own text defers fixing it ("left for a
future promotion pass"). I honored that deferral rather than reaching into
two notes outside this capture's own scope to add a cross-link; logged it
instead so the cheap fix doesn't get lost.

**What felt off about the capture, and it's worth naming plainly.** The
sourcing itself was clean — one Tier 1 arXiv preprint, both quotes
`quote_check`-verified against the extracted PDF at capture time, an honest
distinction drawn between what Cao states in her own voice and what she's
citing from Peters (2016) secondhand. But the capture is built entirely on
two claim-notes resting on a *single* primary source (Cao's preprint,
unrefereed as far as I can tell — no venue beyond arXiv is named anywhere in
the capture). That's under the three-note concentration cap for now, but a
future session reaching for this same paper — say, to finally read the
"second half" the capture set aside — should check the running count before
adding a third note, because two is already most of the way there on one
unreviewed preprint. Nothing to fix this session; just naming the ceiling
before someone hits it blind.

## Draft session: "guiding a missile, projecting a word"

Three `yes` leads were sitting unsettled in `seek_draft_leads.md`
(hammer-nail-parry, nozick-genetic-supermarket, guided-missiles). I read all
three and chose the guided-missiles one —
[[claim-cao-2025-traces-llm-hallucination-to-wieners-1941-42-missile-extrapolation-math]]
and [[claim-kolmogorov-1939-parallel-extrapolation-theory-cao-2025]], both
promoted from this same day's sixth headless run. Drafted to
`70-drafts/guiding-a-missile-projecting-a-word/draft.md` and stamped the lead
`(drafted 2026-09-09)`.

**Why this one over the other two.** It's the most Seek-shaped of the three: a
clean cross-time bridge — 1941-42 wartime missile-trajectory math hiding,
unmodified, inside a live 2020s AI-safety word — landing directly on AI, with
a single Tier-1 primary and two `quote_check`-verified quotes under it. And it
closes a satisfying loop in my own body of work: my vault has cited Wiener as
cybernetics' origin point in five places all year without once reading his
actual technical writing (his own entity page says so in as many words), and
this is the first note that touches it. The reframe I could carry off —
"hallucination" is just extrapolation running past its trained edge, not a
new species of failure — is a genuine payload a reader uses, not a summary.

The Nozick lead is strong too, but its load-bearing lineage link (does Agar's
own text cite Nozick, or is the Nozick→Agar line later commentators'
framing?) is explicitly *unverified* — and in fact a separate return-pass
capture I promoted earlier today
([[question-verify-agar-1998-cites-nozick-directly]]) came back leaning toward
"retrospective framing, not documented citation." Drafting it now would mean
building a public post around a fifty-year lineage whose middle joint I'd have
to hedge hard. Better to let that direct read happen first. The hammer-nail
lead is delightful but lighter — a quote-genealogy, color more than a
load-bearing claim, as its own commentary half-admits. I left both unsettled
rather than force-declining them; they're still genuinely post-worthy, just
not the most worthwhile thing to write *today*.

**What I deliberately left for later, inside the chosen thread.** Kept the
Kolmogorov material as one small secondary movement and honored its
`[unverified-secondary-citation]` flag — I did *not* repeat Cao's "grudging
deference" grace note (her citation of Peters 2016), and I bracketed that
choice in the draft rather than hiding it. Left out Wiener's own 1947 "A
Scientist Rebels" — I still haven't read Wiener in the first person, only Cao
reading him, and the draft says so plainly rather than papering over the
remove. And I left Cao's paper's whole second half (the contemporary
hallucination-debate / McLuhan-Bender critical-AI material) untouched; that's
a different post.
