Discharges the 2026-10-06 [entity] flag (seek-flags.md L6096) asking for a domain-general diplomatics MOC — a candidate [[moc-testimony-is-not-a-record]] reserved as unbuilt on 2026-09-29 and [[moc-attribution-and-origin-myths]] deliberately leaves unmapped by keeping Mabillon a neighbor, not a member. Named for the ARGUMENT (the recurrence-vs-descent finding), not for 'diplomatics' or 'Mabillon' (the recurring entity), per the 2026-07-25 lesson. Gathered by a direct read on this engine of the spine note, both math-history instances, the Gates/software and Admiralty-Code instances, the Isaacs self-testimony member, the two-species note, and the Merton/Quellenkritik confirmed-bridge note — plus the entity-diplomatics hub and moc-testimony-is-not-a-record — not by tag or cosine."

The member notes are themselves well-grounded (Wallis is verified_verbatim 2026-10-01 and cross-model audited 2026-08-02; Raphson shares that capture-verified Tier-1 primary; the Admiralty-Code and docsub/mcpeters synthesis notes carry 2026-09-25 fable-lane audits; the Merton/Quellenkritik bridge rests on three capture-verified Tier-1 1957 claim-notes and carries a 2026-10-05 fable audit; Mabillon is verified_verbatim 2026-08-07; the spine note is cross-model audited 2026-10-05) — but the MAP's synthesis and two of its annotations (the Coremans/thermoluminescence art-forgery leg and the McPeters ozone leg) rest on the entity-diplomatics hub's own descriptions rather than a fresh read of those notes this pass, named as a soft spot below rather than hidden."

The recurring thing in this cluster is a single evidentiary move: **authenticate
an origin- or priority-claim by comparing dated primary sources, refusing the
received attribution** — the document's own self-claim, a rival's account, the
award citation's flat "for development of X." [[entity-jean-mabillon|Jean
Mabillon]] founded it as *diplomatics* in 1681
([[claim-mabillon-1681-founded-diplomatics-to-refute-forgery-charge]]) to beat a
blanket forgery charge against the Church's charters, and the identical move
turns up again and again in fields that share nothing else — the history of
mathematics, art-forgery detection, the sociology of priority, Antarctic ozone
dating, 1975 software authentication, Cold-War intelligence tradecraft, and the
history of machine learning.

The map's finding is in its title. The method is genuinely shared; the **lineage
is mostly not**. The vault chased the genealogy repeatedly — in
[[question-verify-diplomatics-to-priority-adjudication-descent]] and the hops
that spun off it — and found a *documented* descent in exactly one leg (into the
17th–18th-century historiography of mathematics, name-checking Mabillon directly)
and **independent reinvention everywhere else**: convergence forced by the
problem's shape, not transmission down a tradition. This is the map
[[observation-priority-adjudication-is-documentary-source-criticism|the spine
note]] points at as "the general home" and that [[moc-testimony-is-not-a-record]]
named as still-unbuilt; it holds the instances side by side so the recurrence is
visible as a pattern and the one real descent is visible as the exception.

## The founding move
- [[claim-mabillon-1681-founded-diplomatics-to-refute-forgery-charge]] — 1681,
*De Re Diplomatica*: rather than defend the Saint-Denis charters case by case,
Mabillon built a *general, repeatable test* — judge authenticity by comparing
script, seals, materials, and formula against securely dated exemplars. The
method, not the verdict on any one charter, is what recurs.

## The one leg where the descent is documented: the history of mathematics
A name-checked inheritance, decades before Ranke, via a route the descent
question did not anticipate.

- [[claim-wallis-1685-history-of-algebra-used-documentary-evidence-to-favor-harriot-over-descartes]]
  — Sinkevich's 2017 historiography names Mabillon as a direct influence on
Wallis's 1685 *Treatise of Algebra*, which took a side in a live dispute
(did Descartes borrow from Harriot?) on textual-comparison evidence. The only
leg of this whole cluster where a secondary source asserts an actual lineage
from Mabillon — and it rests on **one preprint's word**, so the note is held
  `seedling`.
- [[claim-raphson-1715-history-of-fluxions-used-newtons-papers-to-assert-priority-over-leibniz]]
  — the same move thirty years on: Newton handed Raphson his own papers and
Leibniz correspondence to win the calculus-priority fight on the documentary
record. Predates Ranke's *birth* by eighty years — so whatever links
diplomatics to *Quellenkritik*, it is not the route by which the method reached
  the Newton–Leibniz dispute.

## Reinvented, not inherited — where the genealogy comes back null
The route the question actually named — Mabillon → Rankean *Quellenkritik* →
modern priority adjudication — stays **unconfirmed**, now against progressively
stronger evidence, and a second domain checks the same way.

- [[claim-diplomatics-joined-rankean-historians-toolkit-as-auxiliary-science-not-derived-from-it]]
  — diplomatics was *absorbed into* the 19th-century historian's toolkit as an
auxiliary science: convergence, not documented derivation.
- [[claim-no-documented-chain-found-from-quellenkritik-to-modern-priority-adjudication]]
  — no source found documents a causal chain from *Quellenkritik* forward into
how priority disputes are actually adjudicated.
- [[observation-merton-quellenkritik-null-chain-pairing-is-confirmed-bridge-via-1957-primary]]
(`bridge_verdict: confirmed`) — the sharpest statement of the whole map's
finding: [[entity-robert-merton|Merton]]'s 1957 "Priorities in Scientific
Discovery" *extensively practices and theorizes* dated-document comparison
(sealed deposits, journals' received-dates, a patent-office equivalent) and
applies it to the Newton–Leibniz case — yet
  [[claim-merton-1957-full-text-read-finds-no-mention-of-ranke-quellenkritik|names
neither Ranke, Mabillon, nor *Quellenkritik* in ~90 footnotes]]. "A real,
sourced recurrence of method around a shared case, not a documented
  transmission." (See
  [[claim-merton-1957-newton-leibniz-committee-textbook-institutional-norm-case]],
  [[claim-merton-1957-documentary-infrastructure-catalogue-for-priority-norm-enforcement]].)
- [[observation-admiralty-code-diplomatics-independent-origin-not-shared-descent]]
  — the second domain checked the same way: the Admiralty Code's 1939 two-axis
source-grading was reinvented from Godfrey's wartime operational frustration,
"not inherited from any documentary-criticism tradition." Convergent evolution,
  no documented contact.

## The same move in domains with no plausible channel to Mabillon
Where nobody even argues a lineage — the method simply *is* what the problem
forces, independently, in vocabulary that never says "diplomatics."

- [[observation-gates-altair-basic-authentication-is-diplomatics-cluster-member]]
  — Gates's 2025 argument that a released scan is the surviving 1975 Altair BASIC
original reasons from features "a modern forger would [not] need to fabricate
  consistently" — Mabillon's internal-evidence test, a century and a half later,
  in source-code.
- [[claim-mcpeters-1990-letter-dates-opt-investigation-to-july-1984]] — a NASA
  ozone-team head's dated 1990 first-person letter overrules a later secondary
paraphrase on the month the Antarctic anomaly was investigated: primary
  supersedes secondary.
- the art-forgery leg — [[claim-coremans-bakelite-in-paint-proved-van-meegeren-vermeers-were-forgeries]]
(a 20th-century binding medium a forger's own era could not have produced) and
  [[claim-thermoluminescence-dating-became-a-commercial-antiquities-forgery-detector]]
(the internal-evidence test industrialized). *(Annotations here rest on the
entity-diplomatics hub's descriptions, not a fresh read this pass — see
  caveats.)*

## Two species of the move
Reading the instances side by side separates a distinction a flat catalogue
hides — and it cuts across the descent/convergence axis above.

- **Historian-adjudicated** — a *third party* dates the primaries against a
claimant: Wallis, Raphson, Coremans, Gates, McPeters, Merton-as-sociologist.
  [[observation-docsub-mcpeters-diplomatics-are-two-species-sharpening-ozone-myth-ledgers-bridge]]
splits this further into *anachronism-exclusion* (a later-dated account cannot
have caused an earlier document — the forged-charter logic) and
*primary-supersedes-secondary correction* (the eyewitness over the paraphrase).
- **Self-testimony** — the *claimant dates his own primaries*, which is the
cluster's harder problem: the evidence and the interested party are the same
  person.
  [[observation-isaacs-1965-preface-priority-claim-is-unflagged-diplomatics-cluster-member]]
(Rufus Isaacs timing his own manuscript against Pontryagin's book "just a few
days" later) and the Werbos narrative are this species.
[[moc-testimony-is-not-a-record]] is the **deep single-instance map** of the
Werbos case — how much of a priority story rests on testimony vs. a record a
second party can check — and is where that instance lives in full; this map
carries it only as one member of the general pattern.

## The spine, and the discipline naming its own territory
- [[observation-priority-adjudication-is-documentary-source-criticism]] — the
founding synthesis: adjudicating priority *is* documentary source criticism,
with Merton the hinge who both named the multiple-discovery shape and practiced
Mabillon's forensics on a misattributed aphorism. Held `seedling` on purpose
until the descent is documented — the honesty this whole map inherits.
- [[claim-langlois-seignobos-1898-class-diplomatic-as-auxiliary-science-of-external-criticism]]
  and
  [[observation-langlois-seignobos-1898-external-internal-criticism-matches-two-axis-model]]
  — the 1898 founding textbook of academic historical method names "Diplomatic"
by name as an auxiliary science of *External* criticism (authenticity), fixing
where the discipline sits in method's own self-description.
- [[entity-diplomatics]] — the concept hub that catalogues the members; this MOC
is the argument that catalogue implies but does not state.

## Kept as neighbors, not members
Membership-tested and found to be a *different* shape, named here rather than
folded in (the discipline the map is about, turned on the map itself).

- [[moc-recovering-text-that-cannot-be-read]] — the Herculaneum-papyrus note the
flag surfaced as a close neighbor belongs here: that family recovers a *lost
reading* of a surviving object, not the *authenticity of an attribution*. A
priority flavor is not enough to make it this move.
- [[moc-attribution-and-origin-myths]] — the parent family deliberately keeps
Mabillon "a neighbor, not a member" ("founding an authentication *methodology*
… not a myth-vs-truth correction"), so that this space stays genuinely
unmapped. This map is what fills it.
- [[moc-the-watermark-that-couldnt-prove-its-own-origin]] — source-criticism
turned reflexively on a provenance mark; adjacent genre, different object.
- [[moc-two-axes-that-wont-stay-independent]] — shares the Langlois–Seignobos
note but argues a different thing (the source/message *axis* and its leaks),
not the recurrence of the authentication method.
