The same build dispositions the 2026-10-10 [entity] flag L6420 (a 'documentary source criticism' concept page): the concept already has a hub — entity-diplomatics carries 'documentary source criticism' as an alias, alongside entity-quellenkritik and entity-jean-mabillon — so the cluster's real gap was this navigation layer, not a fourth concept stub. Gathered by a direct read of the cross-domain member notes this pass (founding observation, DOCSUB/McPeters, Gates, Isaacs, patent corroboration, Mabillon); the historian-adjudicated leg is carried from entity-diplomatics' own annotations, not independently re-read this pass (caveated below)."

One forensic move keeps being reinvented in fields that never cite each other:
**authenticate an origin-claim by comparing dated primary sources, refusing the
received attribution** — the document's own self-claim, an award citation's flat
"for development of X," a claimant's own memory of being first. [[entity-jean-mabillon|Jean
Mabillon]] named it for charters in 1681; a 2011 Federal Circuit rule names it for
patents; a NASA letter, a 1975 source-code printout, and two priority-staking
prefaces all perform it without ever using the word. This map holds those
instances side by side.

**What this is, and is not.** This is the *general* map the single-instance
[[moc-testimony-is-not-a-record]] (Werbos's priority narrative, examined as
documents) explicitly points up to and says "does not yet exist." Its parent is
[[moc-attribution-and-origin-myths]], which deliberately keeps Mabillon as a
*neighbor, not a member*, leaving this space unmapped on purpose. The hubs for the
*concept* already exist — [[entity-diplomatics]] (whose aliases include
"documentary source criticism"), [[entity-quellenkritik]], [[entity-jean-mabillon]];
what was missing was the argument-level navigation across domains, which is what a
MOC is for. The **argument** is the evidentiary rule (the attribution is not the
evidence); the **members** are its instances; naming the map for the rule rather
than for "diplomatics" is the 2026-07-25 lesson — the recurring method is not, by
itself, the recurring claim.

## The founding move

- [[claim-mabillon-1681-founded-diplomatics-to-refute-forgery-charge]] — Mabillon
answers a Jesuit's blanket forgery charge against the Church's charters not case
by case but with a *general, repeatable test*: judge authenticity by script,
seals, materials, and formula against securely dated exemplars. (Rests on a
Tier-3 Wikipedia entry quoting a 1972 translation — the thinnest footing in the
  cluster, flagged.)
- [[observation-priority-adjudication-is-documentary-source-criticism]] — the
synthesizing note: adjudicating *who discovered X* and *whether a charter is
genuine* are, at the level of method, one operation. [[entity-robert-merton|Merton]]
is the hinge who both theorized the multiple-discovery shape and *practiced*
Mabillon's method on a misattributed aphorism.

## The documented-descent leg (history of mathematics)

The one leg entity-diplomatics annotates as *direct descent* rather than
convergence — later historians using dated primaries to settle priority:

- [[claim-wallis-1685-history-of-algebra-used-documentary-evidence-to-favor-harriot-over-descartes]]
- [[claim-raphson-1715-history-of-fluxions-used-newtons-papers-to-assert-priority-over-leibniz]]

## The forgery-forensics species (internal features against a forger's motive)

- [[claim-coremans-bakelite-in-paint-proved-van-meegeren-vermeers-were-forgeries]] —
  a 20th-century binding medium a forger's era-appropriate motive could not have
  produced.
- [[claim-thermoluminescence-dating-became-a-commercial-antiquities-forgery-detector]] —
  the method industrialized.
- [[observation-gates-altair-basic-authentication-is-diplomatics-cluster-member]] —
Gates's 2025 Altair-BASIC scan argued genuine (not a reconstruction) from
features "a forger would not need to fabricate consistently": a clean
cross-page header, consistently garbled OCR of the title, a print-queue banner
dated 10-SEP-75. Same move as Mabillon and Coremans, in computing.

## The self-testimony species (the claimant's own word, graded)

- [[observation-isaacs-1965-preface-priority-claim-is-unflagged-diplomatics-cluster-member]]
  — Rufus Isaacs staking priority on the dated fact of his own manuscript against
the arrival of Pontryagin's book; one telling, nothing yet to triangulate.
- Werbos's whole priority narrative — the deep single-instance audit lives at
[[moc-testimony-is-not-a-record]], whose finding is *mostly one witness, partly a
record*. This map carries the instance by pointer, not by re-hosting it.

## The chronology species (dating the record against the narrative)

- [[claim-docsub-episode-postdates-rhw-1986-nature-paper-by-years]] —
  *anachronism-exclusion*: a 1993/1998 account cannot have caused a 1986 paper's
content, the same logic that unmasks a feature postdating a charter's claimed era.
- [[claim-mcpeters-1990-letter-dates-opt-investigation-to-july-1984]] —
  *primary-supersedes-secondary*: a dated first-person letter overruling a later
secondary paraphrase's month, closer to Mabillon's exemplar-comparison than to an
  anachronism argument.
- [[observation-docsub-and-mcpeters-are-unflagged-diplomatics-cluster-members]] and
  [[observation-docsub-mcpeters-diplomatics-are-two-species-sharpening-ozone-myth-ledgers-bridge]]
  — the notes that establish these two as members *and* as two distinct species of
  the one genre.

## The legal register (binding doctrine, not a historian's instinct)

- [[claim-us-patent-law-corroboration-rule-bars-uncorroborated-testimony-of-prior-invention]]
  — MPEP §715 / *In re NTP* (Fed. Cir. 2011): "An inventor cannot rely on
uncorroborated testimony to establish a prior invention date." The same finding
the vault assembled from prefaces and oral histories, carried as enforceable law.
  (The first-to-invent frame it belongs to was largely superseded by the 2013 AIA;
the corroboration *principle* is the durable part.)

## What is a lineage and what is a convergence

The map's load-bearing honesty: most of these instances are a **recurrence of
method, not a documented transmission**. The founding observation holds the
Mabillon → *Quellenkritik* (Ranke) → modern-priority-scholarship descent as an
*analogy* until documented, routed to
[[question-verify-diplomatics-to-priority-adjudication-descent]]. The Wallis/Raphson
leg is the exception entity-diplomatics annotates as genuine descent. The
cross-domain members (ozone, computing, patent law) almost certainly reinvented the
move independently — which is itself the finding, not a defect.

## Where this hangs

- Parent: [[moc-attribution-and-origin-myths]] · Sibling (deep single instance):
[[moc-testimony-is-not-a-record]] · the myth it most often adjudicates:
  [[myth-werbos-invented-backpropagation]].
- Concept hubs: [[entity-diplomatics]] · [[entity-quellenkritik]] ·
  [[entity-jean-mabillon]] · [[entity-robert-merton]].
- Instance hubs: [[entity-paul-werbos]] · [[entity-rufus-isaacs]] ·
  [[entity-richard-mcpeters]].

> [!note] Warden's commentary:
> moc-testimony-is-not-a-record named this map as owed on 2026-09-29 and left it for

> what tipped it from "candidate" to "build." I named it for the rule, not for
> diplomatics, because the whole point is that the rule outruns the discipline: it
> shows up in a NASA ozone letter and a Federal Circuit opinion that have never
> heard of Mabillon. On the L6420 concept-page question: minting a "documentary

> [!warning] Provenance and honesty caveats (read before trusting the map):

> confirm them against their notes.
> - **The founding Mabillon claim rests on a Tier-3 Wikipedia entry** quoting a 1972
> translation — floor-acceptable for an uncontested historical claim, but the
> thinnest footing here.
> - **Mabillon → Ranke → modern-priority descent is unverified** (the lineage-vs-
