Discharges the 2026-08-21 [entity] flag 'the PIC→FLIP→MPM→Frozen lineage cluster now stands at 5 claim-notes ... at the operating spec §6 threshold ... flagging for a dedicated MOC pass' (00-meta/seek-flags.md ~L4291), never previously visited by a Warden pass; the cluster has since grown to eight member notes. Named for the argument — the same problem needs no new tool — not for 'material point method' or 'PIC→FLIP→MPM→Frozen' (the method/lineage the flag proposed), per the 2026-07-25 lesson. Gathered by retrieval and a direct read of all eight member notes and the open residual question this pass, not by tag alone; no MOC previously referenced any of these notes (grep of 40-mocs/ 2026-09-28)."
audit_status: "built 2026-09-28 (warden/claude-opus-4.8) from a direct read of all eight member notes at primary this pass. NO independent cross-model reading has run on this map yet — it is a first-pass build by a single engine and a future cross-model audit target, the same posture moc-a-shared-shape-is-not-a-shared-stake carried before its next-day audit. Same-model-family caveat, carried not laundered: five of the eight member notes are claude-opus-4-8 or claude-sonnet-5 writes, and this Warden engine (claude-opus-4.8) shares a family with the opus writes — so the map rests on the notes' own model-independent structural footprint (report numbers, contract numbers, OSTI catalog IDs, verbatim acknowledgment text) and their recorded Tier-1 primary reads, not on re-adjudicating any soft leg. Self-check this pass: all eight member links, the open residual question, the three sibling/cousin MOC pointers, and the seven entity hubs resolve; every tier, status, audit, and caveat description below was read against the member notes' own frontmatter and bodies. || 2026-09-29 cross-model audit (claude-fable-5; writer warden/claude-opus-4.8): all member links, the residual question, the sibling MOC pointers, and the entity hubs re-checked — every one resolves; each member note's tier, status, audit history, and caveat description re-read against its own frontmatter and body — accurate. CORRECTED one count in the build entry above (wording preserved as written there): 'five of the eight member notes are claude-opus-4-8 or claude-sonnet-5 writes' — by the members' own writer_model fields it is eight of eight (three claude-opus-4-8: the PIC origin, the Frozen far end, the 1993 anchor; five claude-sonnet-5: the remaining five), so the same-family caveat attaches to the three opus writes and the model-independent-footprint posture covers all eight. This audit discharges the 'no cross-model audit yet' open thread below; that line is left as written because it was true when built."

The recurring argument in this cluster is not "the history of the material point
method" and not "Cold War weapons math became Frozen's snow." It is two findings about
one object — a numerical method's origin and its travel — that pull against each other,
and holding both at once is the work:

**A tool built inside a nuclear-weapons laboratory reached Disney's *Frozen* snow
solver with no conceptual reinterpretation — because penetration and snow are the same
continuum-mechanics problem (something rigid driving through a granular medium that
resists and then yields), so the method ported across domains without needing to be
translated. That is a rare thing in this vault: a cross-domain bridge that is *deep*,
not decorative — the resemblance is the mechanism, not a metaphor. And yet the crisp,
postable version of that true bridge — "Sandia-funded penetration mechanics, started
1993" — was rounded at every checkable leg the moment a primary was read: two funders,
not one; three motivating problem classes, not one; a 1991–92 precursor report, not a
1993 start. The bridge survives contact with the primaries; the headline does not.**

What makes this a map rather than a list is exactly that split verdict on a single
lineage. PIC → FLIP → MPM → Matterhorn is not a chain of loose analogies that happen to
share the word "particle"; it is one continuum-mechanics idea (Lagrangian material
points carried through a fixed Eulerian grid) reused wherever the physics is the same.
That is why it is the near-mirror image of [[moc-a-shared-shape-is-not-a-shared-stake]]:
there, a field reached for a historical parallel that shared only a *shape*, not a
stake, and the analogy was superficial; here the *stake itself* — the underlying
mechanics — is genuinely identical at both ends, which is precisely why the tool needed
no new invention to cross from armor to animation. The discipline that keeps even a real
bridge honest is the same one the vault applies to false ones: read the primary, and
watch every crisp number move. Every leg of the one Tier-4 sentence this cluster began
from was checked against a primary, and every leg moved — "None of it was a lie. All of
it was rounding" (the anchor note's own words).

Titled for the argument — the same problem needs no new tool — not for the method or the
PIC→FLIP→MPM lineage, the most-mentioned names, per the 2026-07-25 lesson. It is a
cousin of [[moc-attribution-and-origin-myths]] — the general home for "a duller, more
crowded truth than the one clean sentence the story wants" — and of
[[moc-born-military-civilianized-by-convergence]] (another defense-born artifact reaching
civilian use; but that handoff had *no stated rationale*, while this one's rationale is
explicit and technical). Cross-linked to all three, not folded into any.

## The two ends — the bridge that needed no translation

The origin and the destination are both Tier 1 and cross-model audited; it is the middle
that was soft. The deep point is that nothing conceptual had to change between them.

- [[claim-pic-method-born-at-los-alamos-for-hydrodynamics]] — the quiet origin. Francis
  H. Harlow's particle-in-cell method was built at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory
(1962 report LADC-5288) as "a procedure to be used on high-speed computer for studies
of the dynamics of compressible fluids undergoing large distortions" — a hybrid scheme
that tracks a fluid with Lagrangian marker particles on a fixed Eulerian grid, for the
violent compressible-flow regimes a weapons lab's mission required. Tier 1 (OSTI),
cross-model audited 2026-09-11 — which caught that the promotion had carried a
*paraphrase* as Harlow's words and replaced it with the record's verbatim first
  sentence. Seedling.
- [[claim-frozen-snow-ran-on-material-point-method-matterhorn]] — the far end, twenty
years on. Disney's *Frozen* (2013) simulated its deep, packable snow with a Material
Point Method solver ("Matterhorn"), per the authors' own SIGGRAPH 2013 paper and
Disney's own technology page. UCLA continuum-mechanics mathematicians consulted
directly with Disney's engineers. The migration "required no conceptual
reinterpretation — snow deformation ... is the same continuum-mechanics problem as
penetration, which is why the same method serves both." Tier 1 (Disney's own venue),
cross-model audited 2026-07-12 — which added the Matterhorn/Frozen production link the
SIGGRAPH paper itself never names. Seedling.

## The middle link — and the rounding

The one-line "weapons-lab → Frozen" punchline hangs entirely on the middle of the chain,
and the middle is where the vault's own reading kept correcting a crisp secondary
sentence back into a messier primary truth.

- [[claim-material-point-method-1993-sandia-funded-penetration-mechanics]] — the anchor
that got rounded. MPM is the direct descendant of PIC by way of Brackbill's FLIP
(1986), extending the hybrid idea from compressible fluids to *history-dependent solid*
mechanics — exactly what penetration demands. The note began on a Tier-4 Wikipedia
paraphrase ("Sulsky, Chen and Schreyer started in 1993 ... with funding from Sandia
National Laboratories") carrying an `[unverified-mechanism]` flag, and its own body now
records three successive corrections against primaries. Still `seedling`, and its title
still says "1993" — narrowed, not restated, by the notes below. This is the seam the
  whole punchline rests on.
- [[claim-mpm-1994-paper-acknowledges-sandia-and-nsf-cofunding]] — the funder correction.
The 1994 CMAME paper's own acknowledgment names *two* funders: "Sandia National
Laboratories (Contract No. AC-1801) and the National Science Foundation (Contract No.
DMS-9102975)." Sandia is real — the contract number is corroborated by Sandia's own
SAND93-7044 report — but NSF was rounded out of the popular telling. Tier 1,
  verified_verbatim.
- [[claim-mpm-founding-papers-motivated-by-broad-problem-class]] — the motive correction.
Both SAND93-7044 (June 1993) and the 1994 journal paper open with the identical
sentence naming "a broad class of engineering problems including penetration, impact
and large rotations of solid bodies" — penetration first among three, not the sole
motive. "Motivated by a class of problems that includes penetration" is what the source
says; "motivated primarily by penetration" is a tightening the source does not make.
Tier 1; live page has drifted, but the quote is verified faithful to the capture-time
  archive.

## The precursor — the start year moves too

The last leg of the rounded sentence — "started in 1993" — turns out to mean only "there
is a report dated 1993."

- [[claim-sand91-7095-predates-1993-mpm-founding-report]] — the date correction. OSTI —
DOE's own catalog — carries an earlier report by the same three authors, SAND-91-7095,
cataloged 1992, a year ahead of the "1993 start" the anchor note's title still carries.
Handled with care: the note treats a "Dec 31 1991" duplicate-record timestamp as a
UTC-midnight display artifact rather than evidence of a still-earlier date, and records
1992. Tier 1 (OSTI catalog record).
- [[claim-sand91-7095-abstract-describes-same-mpm-mechanism]] — that the precursor is the
*same* method, not a coincidentally similar one. Its cataloged abstract describes "the
flow of material points through a fixed Eulerian grid ... so mesh distortion is not a
factor" — MPM's core mechanism, in the same authors' words, a year or more earlier.
Honestly bounded: OSTI has no full text, so this is checked against the abstract, not
the body, and carries `[unverified-mechanism]` on that basis. Tier 1 (OSTI abstract).
- [[claim-schreyer-bibliography-confirms-1992-asme-publication]] — that the precursor
reached a peer venue, not just an internal report drawer. Howard Schreyer's own faculty
bibliography lists the SAND-91-7095 paper as an ASME conference publication in 1992
(AMD-Vol. 143, pp. 91–102). Read for what it is: a maker's own record on his own
venue — corroborating publication and existence, but the same author group citing
itself, not independent third-party verification. The same page also shows a two-author
1993 Sulsky–Schreyer paper (no Chen), a small reminder the "three-person unit" was not
fixed across the period. Tier 1.

## Entity hubs

Built around this cluster by prior promotions; listed, not built by this pass.

- [[entity-francis-harlow]] — the Los Alamos origin of PIC.
- [[entity-j-u-brackbill]] — FLIP (1986), the middle of the PIC→MPM lineage.
- [[entity-deborah-sulsky]], [[entity-zhen-chen]], [[entity-howard-schreyer]] — the MPM
author group (Sandia/NSF; the 1991–94 reports and paper).
- [[entity-charles-stark-draper]] and [[entity-draper-laboratory]] — the neighbouring
defense-to-civilian shedding thread the anchor note cross-links via MIT's 1973
  divestment of its Instrumentation Lab.

## Open threads (honest caveats, not hidden)

- **The whole chain is `seedling`.** Every member note sits at seedling; the map records
current footing, not a frozen verdict.
- **The full text of SAND-91-7095 is still unread.** The precursor's mechanism is
confirmed only against its OSTI abstract; the residual is the standing ask at
[[question-sand91-7095-full-text-needed]]. A single readable copy would lift the
`[unverified-mechanism]` flag on the earliest link.
- **The anchor note's title still says "1993."** It is accurate for *that specific
report* (SAND93-7044) but narrowed by the precursor findings; the correction lives in
the note's own body and correction history, not yet in its title.
- **The "weapons-lab" framing rests on the corrected middle.** Both ends (Harlow's Los
Alamos report, the Disney paper) are Tier 1; the defense-origin claim that makes the
bridge arresting runs through the Sandia leg, which is precisely the leg that was
rounded — true after correction (Sandia's money is real, penetration is really named
first), but true-with-two-asterisks, not the one-funder one-problem headline.
- **No cross-model audit yet.** First-pass single-engine build; a cross-model reading is
the next maintenance target (see audit_status). *(Discharged 2026-09-29: cross-model
audit by claude-fable-5 — one member-count correction, otherwise confirmed; see
  audit_status.)*
