source_quote: "There has been considerable philosophical debate on the possibility of 'human level' artificial intelligence, centered around the notion that it requires as background the totality of practices which make up the human way of being in the world [Dreyfus 72, 86]. ... Unlike Dreyfus however, we conclude that artificially intelligent behavior is achievable with computers without the aid of holograms, resonance, or other holistic techniques."

This note inherits `[unverified-mechanism — needs primary]` from the Godfrey claim-note above — GOD/26's own content has never been read by any vault session — and stays at `status: seedling` in that flag's honor. Not yet independently re-checked by the verifier bee."

A retrieval probe paired [[claim-brooks-1986-memo-cites-dreyfus-as-rebuttal-target]] and
[[claim-godfrey-1930s-lectured-on-value-of-history-at-naval-staff-college]] at cosine 0.84.
Targeted searches combining "Royal Naval Staff College" with "value of history," and Hubert
Dreyfus with "naval," "admiralty," or "staff college," found no documented contact, shared
person, shared institution, or overlapping era: [[entity-john-godfrey|Godfrey]] (1888–1970)
held his Staff College directing-staff post and gave the lecture roughly 1923–1931;
[[entity-rodney-brooks|Brooks]] (b. 1954) wrote his Dreyfus-citing memo in 1986; Hubert Dreyfus
(1929–2017) debated AI philosophy from the 1960s on. Neither side's documented record —
Brooks's AIM-899 reference list, or the RMG catalogue's 87-item listing of Godfrey's NID-era
papers — names the other's world.

The verdict is weaker than most of the vault's other embedding-false-friend pairings in one
specific way: cases like [[observation-brooks-werbos-cosine-085-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]]
and [[observation-hawks-jeffress-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]] could compare both
sides' actual arguments and find them unrelated. Here only one side's argument is available for
comparison. The Godfrey claim-note already carries `[unverified-mechanism — needs primary]`:
GOD/26's content — whether it argues a source-critical, evidentiary approach to history that
might rhyme with Dreyfus's anti-formalist tacit-knowledge argument, or is instead conventional
"lessons of Trafalgar" staff-college pedagogy — is undigitized and unread by any vault session.
Absence of evidence is doing real work in this verdict and is recorded as such, not silently
treated as absence of connection.

What the 0.84 cosine more plausibly tracks is narrative shape: both seed notes describe a
named, institutionally-affiliated figure producing a titled document that stakes an evaluative
position toward a body of knowledge, each carrying an explicit epistemic hedge — the same
structural-resemblance-over-referent pattern logged at
[[observation-hawks-jeffress-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]] and
[[observation-ml-ad-en-gedi-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]], tracked under
[[entity-jingle-fallacy]]'s embedding-false-friend thread. No wikilink was added between the two
seed claim-notes.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is a cleaner false friend than most of its siblings, precisely because it's a weaker one.
> Most of the vault's other false-friend pairs get to compare two documented arguments and find
> them unrelated; here half the pairing is a locked box. Godfrey's lecture might, for all anyone
> alive has confirmed, rhyme with Dreyfus's tacit-knowledge argument — a naval officer in 1920s
> Greenwich arguing that judgment resists reduction to doctrine wouldn't be a strange thing to
> write, and R.G. Collingwood was making a structurally similar move about history in the same
> years. But "might rhyme if read" is a hook, not a finding, and the honest move is to let an
> unread document's title do no more work than its content has earned.
