Analytical bibliography, and its method collation, is the shared discipline behind both within-edition and across-edition textual variance

Two vault notes on textual variance are instances of a single fact: the "same" printed text is not identical across its physical instances. claim-early-modern-printers-corrected-print-with-cancel-slips is variance within an edition — copies of one printing corrected differently. claim-pollack-1989-sterile-quote-page-231 is variance across carriers — the "sterile" passage cited to p. 231 vs. p. 232, "judgement" vs. "judgment." The discipline that studies this is analytical (or critical) bibliography, the study of books as material objects; its core method is collation, the systematic copy-against-copy comparison that detects where instances diverge. Reframing both notes as collation problems unifies them. The cancel slip and stop-press correction create the within-edition variance; a page-number or spelling discrepancy across editions is the same variance one carrier further out. In each case the remedy is the same: compare witnesses and record where they differ, rather than trusting any single copy as "the" text.

The discipline runs from hand-collation to instrument to software. Charlton Hinman built an optical machine to collate Shakespeare First Folios (claim-hinman-collator-descends-from-blink-comparator-and-wwii-aerial-recon); today digital tools such as CollateX model the variance among "witnesses" as a variant graph, making explicit that collation is diff.
