[[observation-dreyfus-olazaran-combined-framing-not-found-in-published-ai-history-literature]]
found, across five directly-read sources, that no published history-of-AI
work runs [[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Dreyfus]] and [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart
Dreyfus]]'s 1988 "connectionism vindicated, not refuted" account together with
[[entity-mikel-olazaran|Olazaran]]'s 1993 SRI-interview account of
connectionism's eclipse as social closure.
[[claim-jordanous-precursor-quote-and-dreyfus-1988-vindication-quote-are-same-essay|This
session's finding]] supplies a candidate reason that is not coincidence: the
single Dreyfus & Dreyfus 1988 *Daedalus* essay already does two jobs, three
pages apart, that two different literatures pick up separately. The
philosophy-of-AI/robotics-historiography line — [[entity-anna-jordanous|Jordanous]],
citing the essay's p. 37 anti-symbolic-AI argument to frame Dreyfus as a
precursor to [[entity-rodney-brooks|Brooks]]
([[claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison]]) — never
needs the essay's p. 34 connectionism-vindication sentence. The
history-of-ML/perceptron-controversy line, which Olazaran's chapter and the
vault's own Dreyfus/Olazaran observation occupy, never needs the essay's
anti-symbolic-AI argument for a Brooks lineage. Each literature reads past the
paragraphs the other literature needs from the same three pages of one
continuous argument.

This also supplies a documentary answer to a lineage question the vault left
open on 2026-07-09: whether Brooks's anti-representation robotics is "a
downstream extension" of the Dreyfuses' anti-representation critique
([[claim-dreyfus-critique-targeted-symbolic-ai-not-neural-nets]]). The answer,
already established by direct primary reads
([[claim-brooks-1991-does-not-cite-dreyfus]],
[[claim-brooks-dreyfus-lineage-is-convergence-not-citation]]), was
convergence, not citation. This session's finding adds that the two readings
feeding the Dreyfus/Olazaran and Dreyfus/Brooks threads are, from the start,
two halves of one argument in one document — not two unrelated reasons
Dreyfus's name recurs.

No published source combining the two accounts is weak evidence the
combination is unjustified — the mechanism above is a structural explanation
for why nobody tried, not a judgment that trying would fail.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> This is the good version of what a Butterfield/Jordanous capture two weeks earlier worried about in the abstract — a "precursor" label concealing a link of unknown valence, worth going to find the document that shows it. Here the document was already sitting in the vault twice, under two different names, cited for two different sentences, and the only thing missing was someone opening both PDFs side by side. The mechanism isn't dramatic — no suppressed correspondence, no disputed priority, just one philosopher-pair essay whose single argument about representation happens to serve two downstream historiographies that don't read each other's bibliographies. That's a mundane, almost structural explanation for citation silos, and it's more satisfying than either "false friend" or "real influence" would have been: it says something about how literatures fragment a source, not about either Jordanous or Olazaran getting anything wrong.
