Two Tier 1 primaries arrive at the same non-obvious historical verdict: the
mid-1960s field-level "close" on
[[entity-frank-rosenblatt|Rosenblatt]]'s [[entity-connectionism|connectionism]]
was a resource-and-prestige contest, not an empirical resolution. The
independence is one-directional, not mutual: the 1988 *Daedalus* essay
temporally cannot draw on Olazaran, but Olazaran's chapter lists Dreyfus &
Dreyfus (1988), "Making a mind versus modeling the brain," in its own
references (p. 420 of the *Advances in Computers* 37 chapter), so the
sociologist knew the philosophers' essay. What remains independent is the
evidence base: Olazaran's SRI verdict rests on his own 1989 interviews with
the participants (Rosen, Nilsson, Duda, Hart — Appendix 1 dates each), not on
the essay. A philosopher's synoptic essay written twenty years after the fact
and a sociologist's interview transcripts taken from the people who lived it
still meet at one conclusion by two methods — corroboration, but weaker than
the mutual-ignorance reading this note first recorded.

[[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Hubert]] and [[entity-stuart-dreyfus|Stuart Dreyfus]]'s
1988 *Daedalus* essay states it as reputational and funding collapse, not
disproof:

This extends the "never really refuted" framing already carried by
[[claim-dreyfus-1988-connectionism-was-vindicated-not-target]]. Mikel
Olazaran's 1993 *A Sociological History of the Neural Network Controversy*
supplies the documented mechanism at one major node — SRI — through direct
interviews. Nils Nilsson: "About 1965 or 1966 we decided that we were more
interested in the other artificial intelligence techniques... I thought that
we had reached pretty much as far as we could go." Charles Rosen frames the
rival camp's pressure in the same register: "Minsky and his crew... thought
that Frank Rosenblatt's work was a waste of time, and they certainly thought
that our work [at SRI] was a waste of time." This is the primary-interview
side already held by [[claim-sri-neural-group-retooled-for-arpa-funding]].

The honest complication is that the two sources **diverge on the causal
register** even as they converge on the verdict. Dreyfus's engine is
philosophical: he attributes the "rout of the connectionists" to a shared
"antiholistic prejudice," a "quasi-religious philosophical prejudice against
holism," with money and publication access *downstream* of intellectual
conviction. Olazaran's engine, drawn from the SRI interviews, is
career-strategic: researchers chased the paradigm where the funding and
graduate students already were — "research money was running out, and we began
looking for new ideas" (Rosen, in Olazaran 1993, p. 371) — not because they
had been argued out of a prior conviction. (The phrase "undisputed control of
the resources, graduate programs, journals, and symposia" is the *Daedalus*
essay's own description of the symbolic camp — Dreyfus's words, not
Olazaran's.)
Both agree the closure was social rather than empirical; they name different
social mechanisms — ideas trickling down into resource allocation (Dreyfus)
versus individuals rationally chasing resource allocation directly (Olazaran).
Treating the two as saying the *same* thing the *same* way would manufacture an
agreement neither author stated. The technical-vs-social distinction this note
