article confirms a real bridge, but not the one the cosine score alone
would suggest: the two notes do not describe the same citation. Footnote
17 (p. 258) sources Song Jian's *dating* of his European encounter to
mid-1978 to Song's own 1986 conference essay, pp. 2–3 — a self-report.
Footnote 43 (p. 266), eight pages later in the same "Song discovers
Europe" narrative arc, sources the *identity of the mathematical
technique* Song borrowed to two independent, externally verifiable Dutch
papers: [[entity-huibert-kwakernaak|Huibert Kwakernaak]] 1977 and
[[entity-geert-jan-olsder|G.J. Olsder]] and R.C.W. Strijbos 1976. A reader
cannot substitute one footnote's source for the other's.

The bridge sharpens rather than contradicts the target notes' existing
"single document" finding. The footnote-43 sentence asserting Song
discovered the Dutch work "in Europe" carries no citation of its own for
that framing — only for *what* the work was — leaving the 1978 dating
dependent entirely on footnote 17 and the same unread essay. Footnote 43's
genuinely independent Dutch sources corroborate that Kwakernaak's and
Olsder & Strijbos's work existed and was available to Song's group, but
they say nothing about *when* Song's group encountered it. Two footnotes
that look, from their titles alone, like they document "Song's European
sources" resolve on direct reading into a division of labour: one leg
dates the encounter, the other names what was found, and only the
first carries a date. The vault's entire 1978 dating, across two
separately-cited footnotes in one article, ultimately traces to one
unread essay's pp. 2–3.
