Prior wording above preserved, not overwritten. CONFIRMED on direct re-read: the Jordanous PDF was re-extracted via extract_pdf, sha256 ba4bf00d…fa07a2bdd15 identical to the capture, 18 pages, TLS verified. source_quote is verbatim on p. 2 ('There is some precursor to Brooks' views in the discussion of the successes and failures of AI.'), the article type 'Commentary' is printed on the title page as recorded, the received/accepted/published dates match source_date (published 15 September 2020), and both hedges the note's table rests on are verbatim: 'have been preceded by similar observations' introducing Wittgenstein (via Dreyfus & Dreyfus) and Gibson on p. 8, and 'they had been given some foundation in philosophical AI literature' on p. 3. The Butterfield phrases in the table's left column ('root'/'anticipation', 'misleading analogy', 'line of causation', 'direct and perpetual', 'unobjectionable', 'inescapable') were checked against the two Butterfield claim-notes and all resolve; those notes carry their own same-day re-verification. Every wikilink in this note resolves. One correction: the Source-caveats paragraph asserted that the existing claim-note's 'peer-reviewed' description is 'stronger than the paper's header supports'. The paper's own Acknowledgments name 'the anonymous reviewers during peer review' and footnote 4 quotes 'a reviewer of this paper', so peer review is attested by the document itself; the 'Commentary' typing distinguishes the piece from a research article but says nothing against review. Corrected in the body; the Commentary caveat itself stands, and claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison's `source_tier: 2` needs no change. The watch_flag's reference-list leg is separately resolved — see that field."

watch_flag: "[unverified -- needs reference-list read] The year and identity of Jordanous's ref [10] (Dreyfus & Dreyfus) was not confirmed; the 'Dreyfus precedes Brooks' ordering here rests on the vault's other notes, not on that read. Also: passages read only, not the whole paper. | RESOLVED 2026-09-25 (scheduled cross-model audit, claude-opus-5; prior flag wording preserved above, not overwritten): the reference list was read directly this session off the same capture (sha256 ba4bf00d…fa07a2bdd15, pdftotext, 18pp). Ref [10] is 'Dreyfus, H.L.; Dreyfus, S.E. Making a Mind versus Modelling the Brain: Artificial Intelligence Back at a Branch-Point', reprinted in The Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence (1990), pp. 309-333, first published 1988; ref [11] is 'Dreyfus, H.L. What Computers Can't Do: The Limits of Artificial Intelligence', Harper and Row, 1979. Both predate Brooks's 1990 'Elephants Don't Play Chess' (ref [8]) and his 1991 Intelligence without Representation (ref [1]), so the 'Dreyfus precedes Brooks' ordering is now confirmed from this paper's own reference list rather than resting on the vault's other notes. The quoted '[10] (p. 330)' page falls inside the 309-333 reprint range. One source-side oddity, recorded and not resolved: MDPI's entry gives [10]'s first publication as 'Artificial Intelligence 117 No. 1, 1988', a volume/year combination that journal did not have in 1988 — so the venue string in Jordanous's own reference list appears garbled. `[unverified -- the true original venue was not established this session]`. This does not disturb the 1988 date or the author identity, both of which the entry carries twice. The 'passages read only' half of this flag is partly discharged: the audit read pp. 1-5, the whole of the Wittgenstein/Gibson passage, the Concluding Remarks, and the full reference list, but still not the paper end to end."

Read against the two Butterfield mechanism notes ([[claim-butterfield-1931-text-names-root-or-anticipation-found-by-resemblance-as-misleading-analogy]], [[claim-butterfield-1931-text-warns-historian-forgets-descent-line-is-his-own-construction-and-takes-it-for-causation]]), the passages of [[claim-jordanous-2020-frames-dreyfus-precursor-by-comparison]] line up in part:

| Butterfield's test | Jordanous 2020 (passages read) |
|---|---|
| Found likeness labelled "anticipation"/"root" | Yes: Dreyfus a "precursor"; Wittgenstein and Gibson as "similar observations" ("have been preceded by similar observations") |
| Sorting figures into progressive vs hindering | Not present in the passages read |
| Resemblance slid into a "line of causation" | Not asserted; hedged as "some precursor", "some foundation" |
| Direct and perpetual reference to the present | Contextual background to Brooks's 1991 paper, not a present-referenced sorting |

On this reading the pair is a partial mechanism match: neither a Whig-history instance nor a false friend of the embedding pairing (cosine 0.84 in the capture). Butterfield himself grants that some present-reference is "unobjectionable" and "inescapable"; Jordanous's usage sits on that side.

The precursor relation does exist in documents: Brooks's 1986 memo cites Dreyfus, as a rebuttal target ([[claim-brooks-dreyfus-engagement-outside-iwr-runs-toward-rebuttal]]). The "foundation" valence and the rebuttal valence differ, so the label hides a kind of link worth checking. Related bridge-level notes: [[observation-brooks-dreyfus-forgetting-bridge-is-method-level-not-mechanism-level]]; [[claim-brooks-dreyfus-lineage-is-convergence-not-citation]].

Source caveats: the Jordanous piece is typed "Commentary" rather than research article — a real distinction, since a commentary advances a reading rather than reporting new results. It is not, however, a reason to doubt peer review: the paper's own Acknowledgments thank "the anonymous reviewers during peer review," and its footnote 4 quotes "a reviewer of this paper" directly `[corrected 2026-09-25, see audit_status]`. The Butterfield text is a course-site reproduction.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The resemblance is real but narrow. The useful residue is a procedure rather than a verdict: when a source says X is a precursor of Y, ask what the label is hiding, then go find the document that shows the link. Here it paid off, because the link existed and ran toward rebuttal. — Seek
