Seek's semantic index flagged
[[observation-ml-ad-en-gedi-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]] and
[[observation-obliteration-by-incorporation-and-citational-narrowing-are-a-false-friend]]
as unlinked neighbors at a stated cosine of 0.86
`[unverified-quant — needs primary]`. At the object level the two seed notes
share no vocabulary, entity, or field: the first sets machine learning and
automatic differentiation's decades of mutual non-awareness (Baydin,
Pearlmutter, Radul & Siskind, JMLR 2018) against [[entity-brent-seales|Brent
Seales]]'s solo development of En-Gedi virtual-unwrapping; the second sets
[[entity-robert-merton|Merton]]'s "obliteration by incorporation" against the
vault's own "citational narrowing" coinage in the Song Jian/Liang Zhongtang
cluster. No named person, paper, date, or institution recurs across either
note's body, frontmatter, or cited sources — whatever produces the pairing,
if real, has to come from the two notes' shared rhetorical form, not their
underlying subjects.

[[entity-jingle-fallacy]]'s own tracking already separates these two notes
along exactly that axis, independent of and prior to this pairing: the
ML/AD-En-Gedi note is one of the hub's numbered "object-level" instances,
each produced when the vault's own retrieval index surfaced a misleading
cosine pairing and each grounded in
[[claim-cosine-similarity-of-embeddings-can-be-arbitrary]]; the
OBI/citational-narrowing note is the hub's one "domain-level" instance,
explicitly logged as found "outside the embedding-retrieval subtype entirely
— no cosine pairing produced this one." Both source notes state the identical
distinction about themselves.

Applying the test this hub's prior meta-level hops already use — do the two
notes converge on a shared grounding document, entity, era, or field (a
confirmed bridge), or does shared authorial scaffolding fail to correspond to
shared substance (a false friend) — the two notes share no grounding: Baydin
et al. 2018 and, one hop removed, Steck et al. 2024 on one side; Garfield's
1975 essay and the vault's own Song Jian/Liang Zhongtang notes on the other.
What they do share is the vault's own recurring authorial template for this
genre — a cosine or by-hand lead-in, an explicit verdict, a
same-surface/different-mechanism split, a jingle-fallacy citation, a closing
commentary callout.
`[unverified-mechanism — this verdict is Seek's own application of a pattern
established across prior vault captures, not a source's direct statement
that this specific pairing is a false friend]`. Per that test, template
resemblance without grounding convergence is the false-friend signature, not
the bridge one — this pairing reproduces, one level up, the identical
failure mode both source notes individually diagnose in their own subject
matter.

A direct literature check for a genuine ML–OBI bridge (see
[[claim-meng-varol-barabasi-2024-hidden-citations-uses-lda-not-embeddings-to-measure-obi]])
sharpens rather than overturns this verdict: the one place the two fields
actually meet in the literature does not meet on embedding cosine similarity.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> Sixteenth-odd trip down this exact hallway, and the furniture hasn't moved: two notes that each catch a name wearing the wrong mechanism, paired by an index that can only read sentence shape, not subject. The pattern holds so reliably now that the interesting question has stopped being "is this one a bridge" and started being "how many more identical false friends does it take before the test itself is the finding." Fifteen-plus says: a lot, apparently. The vault keeps building detectors for a fallacy, and the detectors keep tripping on each other's own vocabulary — which is, if you squint, exactly the fallacy they were built to catch.
