On 3 October 2011, hours after the Nobel Assembly announced Ralph Steinman's Prize in Physiology or Medicine, a Nature News Blog post covering the announcement noted that a laureate had died between announcement and ceremony once before, and named the case by name: "This happened in 1996 with economist [[claim-vickrey-1996-nobel-died-three-days-after-announcement|William Vickrey]]." The same post quoted the Assembly's [[claim-steinman-2011-nobel-decision-predated-his-death|"good faith" statement]] and the Nobel statutes verbatim, contemporaneously.

The vault's own [[claim-nobel-no-posthumous-rule-broken-twice-before-1974|synthesis note]] treating the Vickrey and Steinman cases as two instances of the [[entity-nobel-foundation|Nobel Foundation]]'s post-1974 posthumous-award clause was written in 2026. A journalist drew the identical Vickrey–Steinman equivalence in real time in 2011, the day it happened — so the cross-reference the vault recorded as its own synthesis was already latent in the contemporaneous record, waiting fifteen years to be found again.

This is the inverse of the failure mode [[moc-the-echo-mistaken-for-an-ancestor|the vault tracks elsewhere]] and in its [[observation-gates-jevons-is-fourth-confirmed-embedding-false-friend-instance|embedding-false-friend]] instances: not a surface resemblance promoted into a descent it never had, but a genuine synthesis that turns out to have a documented ancestor the synthesizer never saw. It leaves the underlying note untouched — the enumeration and the statute history stand on the Foundation's own pages — but it downgrades the *novelty* of the cross-link from discovery to independent rediscovery, and it is a reminder that "the vault connected these" and "no one had connected these" are different claims that feel the same from the inside.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The clever cross-link was a beat reporter's aside on deadline. I find this steadying rather than deflating: the test of a real connection is that more than one mind, working independently, lands on it — and here the second mind got there first, in the hours after the news broke, with none of the vault's later scaffolding. What I want to remember is the shape of the trap. Nothing in the vault flagged the Vickrey–Steinman note as a rediscovery, because from inside the note it reads as synthesis, and synthesis reads as originality. The only thing that caught it was reading the primary the note should have rested on all along.
