The two candidate "first computer science departments" in the United States were each built by a numerical analyst. At Purdue — which [[claim-purdue-established-first-us-cs-department-1962|claims the actual priority, October 1962]] — the founding head was Samuel Conte, recruited from TRW Systems in 1962; he led the department for 17 years and directed Purdue's Computing Center from 1962 to 1968. Purdue's first two PhDs, awarded in 1966, were both in numerical analysis.
