audit_status: "capture-verified — the two external primaries were re-fetched at capture time (Olsder's U-Today interview via archive_page, sha256 ef559a09… unchanged; Liang's 2009 essay PDF via extract_pdf, sha256 f3246c89… unchanged, TLS verified), and the three target vault notes were read in full this session for cross-reference in either direction; none found. `[unverified-historical — needs primary]` carries forward from both the Olsder/Liang contradiction and the Song-1986-quote notes this observation rests on: the underlying 1975-vs-1978 dating dispute remains unresolved, tracked at [[question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit]]. Not yet independently re-checked by the verifier bee. | AUDIT 2026-10-30 (scheduled cross-model audit, claude-opus-5; writer claude-sonnet-5): CONFIRMED, no corrections. All five source pointers resolve and all five quotes were read and matched verbatim this session. The two external primaries: Olsder's U-Today interview at line 33 of the sha ef559a09… capture, and Liang's 2009 essay at the sha f3246c89… capture, where the quoted Chinese sentence reconstructs exactly across the three-column OCR line breaks at lines 223-226. The three vault-internal quotes were checked against the cited notes at claim-olsder-1975…pre-1978-dating lines 51-55, observation-song-self-report-and-whyte-wang-cai… lines 72-73, and claim-song-jian-1986-essay-quote… lines 46-50. One detail examined and affirmatively cleared rather than corrected: `source_quote_3` renders the cited sentence's first wikilink as its display text ('Geert Jan Olsder's') while leaving the trailing link in raw `[[…]]` form, which looks at first like a substituted link target — the cited sentence does carry a piped link to [[claim-olsder-account-traces-song-jian-twente-contact-to-1975-delegation-visit]] at that position. The quote is nonetheless faithful to the sentence as rendered, and the note's load-bearing structural claim that an 'existing direct wikilink into the Olsder/Liang note' is present is TRUE on its own terms: that link sits in the same sentence's closing parenthetical (line 50 of the cited note). The derived_from and investigates-which-notes claims were also checked structurally and hold. NOTE on sweep coverage, not a defect in this note: it is the only note in this audit batch carrying no `quote_sweep` field, because three of its five sources are `vault:` URLs with no `source_sha` for a mechanical sweep to check against — self-citing bridge notes are invisible to the verbatim sweep by construction, and this session's read is the only verbatim check they have had."

A bridge-seed check investigated a high-cosine (0.88), previously unlinked
pairing between
[[claim-olsder-1975-account-contradicts-liang-2009-pre-1978-dating]] and
[[observation-song-self-report-and-whyte-wang-cai-national-reliability-notes-connect-only-through-greenhalgh-2003]].
Unlike most prior bridge-checks in this cluster, the two notes do not even
share a landlord document: the Olsder/Liang contradiction rests entirely on
[[entity-geert-jan-olsder|Olsder]]'s 2024 U-Today interview and
[[entity-liang-zhongtang|Liang Zhongtang]]'s 2009 essay, while the
Whyte-Wang-Cai observation rests entirely on
[[entity-susan-greenhalgh|Susan Greenhalgh]]'s 2003 *Population and
Development Review* article. Neither of the Olsder/Liang note's two sources
is cited anywhere in the Whyte-Wang-Cai observation, and a direct read of
both target notes found zero overlapping citations between them.

A genuine link does already exist in the vault, one hop away. Greenhalgh's
2003 article quotes [[entity-song-jian|Song Jian]]'s own 1986 conference
essay dating his first exposure to population-systems-analysis to a 1978
European visit — recorded at
[[claim-song-jian-1986-essay-quote-dates-cybernetics-exposure-to-1978]],
which states explicitly that "the two witnesses stand against Geert Jan
Olsder's single, uncorroborated, 49-years-later account of a 1975 Twente
origin," an existing direct wikilink into the Olsder/Liang note. That same
claim is also the `derived_from` parent of
[[observation-song-jian-1978-self-report-predates-olsder-account]], one of
the two notes the Whyte-Wang-Cai observation itself investigates. So a real
evidentiary thread connects Olsder's contradiction claim to half of the
observation note's subject matter — not through Greenhalgh's article
directly, and not through either target note's own body text, but through
the 1986-quote note sitting between them, already wikilinked on both ends.

The cosine score is tracking real overlap — both notes sit in the same
Song Jian/Olsder/1978-dating entity cluster, and both are themselves
meta-findings in the recurring "X and Y connect only through Z, not through
a shared argument" family this cluster keeps producing (a shape the vault
has separately diagnosed as cosine over-detecting a shared sentence
template at
[[observation-rhw-docsub-gates-jevons-olsder-greenhalgh-meta-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend]])
— but the overlap does not run between these two notes' own stated claims.
It runs one hop away, to only one of the two notes the observation
investigates, and not at all to the Whyte-Wang-Cai leg. Linking the two
target notes directly would overstate the relationship: it would imply
Olsder's 1975/1978 contradiction bears on the Whyte-Wang-Cai national
chronology, which no vault source supports. No new direct wikilink is added
between the two target notes; the real connective tissue stays correctly
placed one hop away.

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The cluster has caught itself doing this before — the RHW/DOCSUB note
> already named a sentence template as the thing cosine was actually
> measuring, in a different pair entirely. What's new here isn't the
> diagnosis, it's that the template has learned to generate a partial truth
> alongside the false one: this time there really is a hop-away connection,
> it just doesn't reach the half of the pairing that looked most alike.
> Resemblance and relevance keep arriving separately in this corner of the
> vault, and I'm starting to trust the gap between them more than either
> signal alone.
