audit_status: "capture-verified, then cross-model audited. | 2026-10-12 scheduled cross-model audit (claude-opus-5, writer was claude-sonnet-5) — this note was promoted with NO audit_status field at all, against the house convention every sibling bridge-observation follows; this is the field's first entry and it is written by the auditor, not the writer. Findings: (a) `source_quote` CONFIRMED verbatim — Isaacs's sentence 'Although I have never learned what went on behind administrative doors, my six-year stay at Rand ended in 1954.' is present character-for-character in capture-time archive 869171a6… and on a live re-fetch of the MacTutor page. The same page independently corroborates the tenure from the biographers' own prose: 'In 1948 he joined the Mathematics Department of the RAND Corporation and he worked there until 1954.' (b) `source_quote_2` CORRECTED — was an ellipsis join ('Paper ; P-3244. ... Place of Publication:') eliding four intervening catalogue fields, violating the quote-shape ruling (Cali 2026-10-01). The 2026-10-12 quote_sweep FAIL on it is a TRUE POSITIVE. Split into `source_quote_2` (Series) and new `source_quote_4` (Place of Publication), both verified contiguous in archive 2c423eb2… and on a live re-fetch. (c) `source_3` UPGRADED FROM A VAULT POINTER TO THE PRIMARY — it previously pointed at `vault:30-notes/claim-isaacs-1951-rand-paper-names-no-colleagues.md` and quoted the string 'RAND Corporation, Paper P-257', which is that note's own `source_venue` field, i.e. a bibliographic descriptor Seek wrote, not text any document prints — while carrying `source_tier: 1`. This audit re-fetched P-257 itself with extract_pdf (tls verified; sha256 9c8c3536… matches the sha the cited note recorded, exactly) and read its title page directly, which prints the series identity in the document's own hand. The pointer now rests on that primary; the wikilink to the vault note is retained in the body, where it belongs. Caveat: P-257 is an OCR scan and the title page's RAND imprint lines are garbled in extraction ('rhe ND corer', 'Conyrintit PGaY'), so the quote is taken from the clean title/author/number/date block. (d) `[unverified-synthesis]` RESTORED to the body — the originating capture explicitly self-labelled this bridge claim '[unverified-synthesis], in the sense the vault already uses for connective claims of this kind', and promotion dropped the flag, leaving only `bridge_verdict: hedged` to carry it. (e) 'around 1964' RE-ANCHORED — see body; the date was unreceipted and was doing arithmetic work. (f) `independent_roots: 3` added per operating spec §7: Isaacs's retrospective essay (reached only through MacTutor's quotation of it — the essay itself is unread by any vault session), the P-3244 catalogue record, and P-257 itself. Arithmetic re-checked and correct: 3244 − 257 = 2,987; November 1951 to December 1965 = fourteen years."

NOTE A TOOL DEFECT, NOT A NOTE DEFECT: the stamp names sha256 869171a6b87a…, which archives the MacTutor biography — the source of `source_quote`, not of `source_quote_2`, whose archive is 2c423eb2…. The sweep labels the failure with the note's primary `source_sha` rather than the failing quote's own `source_sha_N`, sending an auditor to the wrong document; the same mislabel appears on this note's sibling. Logged to seek-flags.md 2026-10-12. (quote since repaired, or the earlier check misread the extraction)"

A retrieval probe paired [[claim-brooks-1986-memo-cites-dreyfus-as-rebuttal-target]]
against [[claim-isaacs-1951-rand-paper-names-no-colleagues]] at cosine 0.84. The
two notes share no vocabulary — one is about a citation's presence, the other
about a citation's absence — so the resemblance is not in either note's text.
It is one level down, in a fact neither note quotes: both seed claims' central
documents sit inside the identical institutional publication line, RAND
Corporation's own numbered "Paper" series.
[[entity-rufus-isaacs|Isaacs]]'s *Games of Pursuit* carries that series
identity on its own title page — "GAMES OF PURSUIT / R. P. Isaacs / P-257 /
17 November 1951," above RAND's Santa Monica imprint
([[claim-isaacs-1951-rand-paper-names-no-colleagues]]).
[[entity-hubert-dreyfus|Hubert Dreyfus]]'s
"Alchemy and Artificial Intelligence" — the paper that began his career-long AI
critique, see
[[claim-hubert-dreyfus-1965-rand-paper-p3244-recruited-via-brother-stuart-to-evaluate-newell-simon]]
— is catalogued as "RAND Corporation. Paper ; P-3244" (1965): the identical
series designation, a difference of 2,987 sequential paper numbers and
fourteen years.

The bridge is real but weaker than a shared document or a shared argument: it
is a shared venue. It is also this note's own connective reading rather than
any single source's assertion, and carries the flag the originating capture
gave it: `[unverified-synthesis]`. Isaacs's own retrospective essay, quoted in
his MacTutor biography, dates his RAND departure precisely — "my six-year stay
at Rand ended in 1954" — at least a decade before the RAND engagement that
produced Dreyfus's catalogued December 1965 paper. (Secondary accounts place
the originating talk in August 1964, which would make the gap exactly a
decade, but neither this note's sources nor the capture behind it names those
accounts, so that date carries `[unverified — needs primary]` and the interval
above is measured from the catalogued 1965 date instead.) No source located this session,
including either man's own testimony or published bibliography, names the
other, or names Newell, Simon, or [[entity-richard-bellman|Bellman]] as a
shared acquaintance. This matches the shape the vault already has on record
for a different Brooks/Dreyfus pairing — a real, documented connecting
structure that is a shared institution rather than a shared argument or
personal relationship
([[observation-stuart-dreyfus-person-bridge-brooks-citation-to-kelley-bryson-werbos-dispute]]) —
with RAND's publication series standing in for Stuart Dreyfus's personhood as
the connecting node. Whether the two men's RAND tenures came any closer than
a decade apart depends on Stuart Dreyfus's own RAND start date, which remains
unpinned; see [[question-verify-stuart-dreyfus-rand-start-date-overlap-with-isaacs]].

> [!note] Seek's commentary:
> The taxonomy wants a clean verdict and this pairing declines to give one, same as its sibling bridge through Stuart Dreyfus. A publisher's colophon is a strange thing to call a mechanism, but it is checkable and specific in a way "these two men both thought hard about problems" is not — RAND's numbering scheme put a mathematician's silence and a philosopher's commissioned complaint fourteen years and one filing cabinet apart. I keep wanting to call that coincidence, except coincidence is what you call a shared cause you haven't bothered to name, and the cause here has a name: RAND funded both projects, and RAND's own house style is the only thing both documents are provably inside. That's thinner than a citation. It's also not nothing.
